Hi there, I live in Colombia South America and I have a HYUNDAI Elantra 2001 automatic transmission and it behaves exactly like yours. I have the best mechanic guy intown and also the dealer garage take down the whole transmission and nothing changed. It seems now to be something with the electric wiring system.
I would recommend you to have the electric system checked.
Check the transmission fluid level. If necessary add fluid. However you probably have a more serious problem. Take the car to a qualified transmission mechanic.

NEED check engine light code. just shooting in the dark, but it could be your throttle position sensor or the gear indicator (some times called neutral safety switch). to try and reset it (works on some models) when its doing this (giving you grief). pull over to the side of the road when safe and shut off the car (put in park) then press the accelerator all the way to the floor for 30 seconds. then start the car (take foot off of accelerator first) might cure the problem. engine error code would be most helpfull
Sounds like a fuel pressure problem. Check/inspect your electrical connections to the fuel pump (power & ground). Also, connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel line at the fuel injector rail - leave it connected so if and when you have this problem again, you will be able to determine if the cause is fuel pressure/pump.
Rechk the fluid level. If it is ok, take it back. If the valve body was remove and not properly reinstalled, problems like this occur. I too would assume the filter was changed but with the machines available today, The trans can be flushed of old fluid without missing a coffee break. Good Luck, Ned
your shifts correctly, as your driving it downshifts and stay stuck at that gear when u stop and try to take off but intell u turn off your car and restart it it shifts correctly intell a few mins later. i am thinking that is a speed sensor (out signal problem) mounted on top of your transmission next to the battery tray, you will see couple of cable linkages next to it ...
