2000 VW Beetle with Airbag light on - I scanned and am getting Code 01317 (Instrument Cluster J285). I checked the wire connectors under both front seats and tried clearing the code and still have the airbag light on. Any suggestions where I can fix this problem other than taking it to the dealer...
Thanks - Tom
The problem is the seatbelt latch. The wiring right at the latch and the strap are broken. Seems there is not enough slack in these wires to allow much stretch. You may be able to repair it if you can splice these wires back together if not about 160 to 170 for a new one. you can have it put on a machine and if the code leads back to the latch then you know this is the problem.
The main thing to remember when messing around with the air bags is that it doesn't take much to set them off. I ave seen them inflate just by unplugging and pluging them back in. I suggest the dealer as your safest bet.

Our 2000 beetle has the airbag light on, this is the second time it has illuminated( the first time we took the car to our local vw dealer he said it was the airbag sensor sensing low battery power) that was about 5 months ago it has now come back on
Bag lite on, took to VW in Sheboygan, WI. estimate $1000.00 to repair, there sure isn't a $1000.00 mark up on anything we sell!! I'm a small used car dealer and you can bet there will never be any VW on our car lot again!!
