I have a 1997 ls 400 with random misfire code, the car sometimes will not start then once it does runs very gas and the exhaust is straight white smoke, smells very strongly of fuel. We have replaced all the spark plugs caps rotors, nothing. Someone told us it was the igniters but that didn't help either. What could our problem be?

SOURCE: Ghost like random misfire. Sometimes it is there

The most common reasons are tired fuel-pump (with Chevys The pump PSI. needs to be 35 or better or the fuel pressure regulator wont work properly) , clogged cat., lack of maintenance (needs air, fuel filter), water in the fuel tank, stretched/loose timing chain. Good luck.

Up to this point in time, mechanic 1 has only done some maintenance work on the car. Things that would be done from time to time to maintain the car.
Since you have lost trust in this mechanic, I would go to a different place and have them diagnose the codes. If the second place gives you the same recommendation you can decide what to do.
You can tell the second place you are getting a second opinion, or not.

Code 301, random or cylinder 1 misfire

Spake pluge could have gone bad, or the Spark Plug wire. Try changing all your plugs and wire and inspect the old one's. The wire could be bad do to time or may have been against the exhaust manifold and brunt. Good luck

I would check out the EGR valve. That maybe what is causing all the misfires.

Woul not pass smog

The most likely cause of your problem is the EGR valve. It is likely that the problem you are having is caused by the EGR valve sticking open causing a lean running condition and misfire. There are other things it could be but this is the most likely cause of your problem.
