Does it sound like a squealing, a humming, or some other friction related noise? If so, it could be the alternator or the water pump bearings going out. But do let us know what the noise sounds like!

Loud rattling sound top of engine near or below the alternator when idling, goes away if accelerator is pressed

Hello: Remove the serpentine belt, see if the waterpump pulley wobbles/makes noise when you spin it. If thats not it then start the engine, belt still off see if noise is there also while engine is running see if vthe crankshaft pulley wobbles. Also check the A/C compressor pulley (engine off, belt off) spin it by hand and check for noise and wobble. If all the previous is ok then it could be the balance shaft front bearing and or the timing chain.

I drive a 2006 hyundai elantra with around 30,000 miles on it and lately there has been a rattling noise coming from the engine bay. It happens around 2000 rpm and only in drive. I narrowed the noise down...

This sounds like a bad pulley, maybe bearings in the waterpump or alternator, you will need to remove belt and spin each pulley to locate and also check for a loose pulley.

Have loud noise from engine, gets louder w/more rpms.it is an automatic,60k miles.no exhaust or muffler problem.

Serpentine belt tightener pulley bearing was bad, made a loud noise. I replaced the pulley (jobber part) and the noise level was reduced enough to notice the waterpump was also making a noise ... more revs = louder noise. I am now replacing the water pump. (approx 60k Miles too).

Have a strange humming noise that can be heard

Hi:
Often "humming" noises like what you are experiencing are caused by a failing bearing somewhere. Some usual suspects are wheel bearings, alternator bearings, and sometimes even your waterpump, but usually it starts leaking too. To start narrowing down what it is, have someone ride with you to see if the noise is coming from left side or right side, or engine area, then see if it happens when the car is not moving, or just when the drive wheels are pulling the car? This way , hopefully you can pin point the culprit!

The car was running fine and suddenly made a loud noise like water gurgeling all warning lights about water temp came on is it the thermastat

Sorry, not the thermostat. Check the coolant level and refill and locate the leak. I suspect the waterpump, make sure the belt is turning the waterpump. Do not drive an overheating engine.

(If the drivebelt breaks while running it will destroy the engine!)
