I believe you are correct - the radiator is probably plugged, but you should also check the water pump.

pull codes from on board diagnostics turn key on not running press and hold hot button on temp and off at same time till dash lights up write down codes respond with all computer codes i will help you determine prodlem and try to fix

SOURCE: how to reset oil life

To reset the engine oil life, do this: push info button till oil life comes up, then push inforeset, to reset to 100%


To reset the transaxle oil life do this: early models; press off and rear defrog button simultaneously.
later models; press info till the oil message shows up then, press and hold info reset.


Some models have both, but my 94 Deville only monitors the transaxle

I do think you have to pull he dash, for that you will need a manusl, try ebay for used factory manuals, I have had good luck getting them there for all my cars.

Failed ect sensor thermostat reading over 270f

It means you should try replacing the engine coolant temperature sensor as it has probably failed (it's located on the driver's end of the engine at the middle about half way down).

I bought a thermostat from advance auto parts for my 1999 cadillac deville but I was told that it should only be bought from a cadillac dealership but I used it anyway. I put the thermostat on and the car...

Who did all this work?
Was the water pump bad?
Was the radiator, so clogged it could not be cleaned?

What diagnostics was done?

Is the car actually over heating? That is where you start

All that work may have been for not

When you removed the stat,the temp never went up,only the gauge,
can not run a veh without the stat, the temp sensor needs it in there

Is the exhaust converter partially blocked?
Is the engine running rich

Have the data looked at.

1996 Cadillac Sedan Deville that overheats only when idling

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line(small hose).The purge line is designed to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank (not the cap) ,this is the purge line.
With the engine idling,pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating.
If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage.
The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side close to the thermostat housing,the blockage may be there.

Coolant temp. raising. no coolant loss.

first with the car off and cool squeeze bottom radiator hose with your hand then do the top,this burps any air out of the system,of course have the cap open,if this doesnt solve the problem its your radiator cores are block as you speed up its trying to force coolant thru a blocked core and temperature rises,you can pull your raidiator and have it cored at a radiator shop,cheeper than buying new
