Vw Golf 3 1.9 tdi 1997. euro model. the car worked just fine even if the battery was taken down a few times for change and / or recharge. One time, after mounting the recharged battery back in, the car worked for couple of hours. After that it stood still for an hour or so and I tried to start it again. Glow plugs light wouldn't come on at all and the car would just crank but it wouldn't start. The fuse is new, the glow plug relay works fine, the glow plugs are brand new Bosch for tdi diesel engines. When the ignition key is turned, still no light for glow plugs, but the power / impulse is there 'til the glow plugs control unit just under the glow plug fuse beneath the hood. No impulse goes through and so the glow plugs don't do their job.p.s. here, the outside temperatures are about 29'F, so no glow plugs means no start.

SOURCE: No glow plug light, car turns over but won't start, no CEL or codes

Very common problem in our shop.  I bet you it is the main power relay located under the dash on the driver's side.  That relay failure is consistent with your symptoms.

Ok , ok. Give me some more information and we'll solve this. We're talking about a jetta TDI 2000 with an ALH engine code I figure.
#1 Do you have an faults recorded in the ECM like a check engine.
#2 Are you using synthetic oil 5W40 preferably Castrol?
#3 How old is your fuel filter?

SOURCE: VW passat glow plug problem

Yes you have a defective glow plug relay if you have your owners manual you can find it and replace it, the unit also has a timer on it, if you don't have a book look for the glow plugs and follow the wires from the glow plugs to where they terminate there you will find the relay unit and replace it, to test the glow plugs you remove the wires and test each plug by pulling off the wire and with a cheep ohm meter touch one end to the glow plug and one end to ground if it swings almost al the way over it is ok, if it dos not move then that glow plug is bad. if you find 2 or more bad then replace them all, and if a glow plug has shorted and caused this problem you will have to replace the glow plug relay. Good luck.

My VW golf TDi won't start since I changed my battery. It started fine for three days and now there is absolutely nothing there when I turn the key not even a click. Please help

1. Do all lights, accessories, central locking system etc in the car all operate normally.

2. Have you tested to see if the car starts when you try jump starting from another vehicle.

3. What warning lights were displaying on the vehicle a day or 2 before you had the problem.

4. Were you having the same starting problems with the old battery that you have just replaced.

Vw golf cutting out

No it is impossible to say without testing the vehicle and doing a complete analysis with the correct diagnostic equipment.

These vehicle have numerous electrical faults that sometimes the VW dealer service centres cannot diagnose. What has been happening to you is the mechanics have been guessing what the problem is and just changing things without really identifying the actual cause - as you have now found. These are very unreliable cars so do not be fooled by the "german quality" label that people frequently and wrongly apply to German cars.

If you want and need a reliable car I would recommend you get rid of this Golf and get yourself a Mazda (and have any prospective used car thoroughly inspected before biuying). If you keep the Golf I guarantee it will give you much grief and cost you plenty more repairs.

Hi, i've been told the turbo on my 2006 !.8 Golf TDI has blown and need a new one. How much would a new one cost please? Thanks

Best place to start is eBay vw turbos can range from $250.00 to $700.00 but it depends on your model and engine size. You can look up vw golf websites and I believe you can even by them cheaper through club web sites
