Wow, I thought I was the only one to have this issue. I've even taken it to a shop and they claim they have no idea what is causing this. I always have to turn the fan off to make the noise go away. After a few minutes I can put the heat or air conditioning back on and the noise is no longer there. There are days when I have to do this every few minutes, especially in the rain.

its your serpentine belt (thats what its called) and you will need a 3/8 ratchet and then find the belt tensioner. The tensioner has a spot where you need to put the ratchet into and pull or push depending on whatever way and that will releive the pressure off the belt so you can take it off.
SOURCE: Ho to replace serpentine belt. cant find anything
There probably won't be any adjustments. Serpentine Belts have be used for 25 or 26 years to my memory ,and have spring loaded tensioners to keep belt tight. So I quess your new to the car world. You release the tension with a long 1/2" Drive ratchet or tool specific for belt replacement. If you need to buy any tools you don't have, your better off leaving it to the pros
SOURCE: i need to change the timing belt
If your belts are squealing it is the drive belt/belts that need attention not the timing belt. You need to check your belt tension and condition and replace as needed. If a timing belt ever got to the point that it might squeal the car would not run because it would be too far out of time. Your belts will all be external whereas at timing belt is internal and a major part of the engine.

normal recommended practice is 100,000 km but can last up to 127k-160 but would not leave it for that long as a broken belt will cost more than to replace one before time.

Danielle,
I'm sorry your SUV is also making that annoying noise, but I'm glad I'm not alone. I think it has something to do with the blower fan, but honestly have no idea. I'm not very car savvy.
The noise is more constant in the rain or hot humid days. I also find turning off the heat or air seems to solve the problem, but living in Minnesota I don't find turning off the heat in winter a very good solution.
I think I'll take it in and have them check it out. I've researched the blower fan and it looks like it could be an expensive fix.
Anyone else have any ideas?
