Hi there:
The engine serial number and type are stamped on the left side of the
cylinder block at the top of the mounting for the water pump. There is
also a decal on the timing cover with the engine type, manufacture
number and serial number.

Hi. The number is stamped on a flange on the block facing up at the head/block joint , look down under the brake fluid reservoir part of the engine (I think). The engine code will be on a white label/sticker on the cam cover with B4194T (Ph.1), B4194T2 (Ph.1.5) or B4204T5 (Ph.2) depending on the year/phase. If the label is not there it can be found stamped on the rear upper cam belt side of the engine block. Alternatively, check the VIN to see which engine was fitted at time of manufacture.
