The security light turns on when the car doesn't or can't read the signal from your smart key. It considers this a threat and locks out the starter. It can be a bad or worn key, a broken or worn lock cylinder in the ignition, or a malfunctioning Theft Deterrent Module. (TDM). You can start replacing these parts with the proper GM original parts and hope you get the right one, or bypass the system entirely. This link should help you understand the problem and also offers solutions to fix this yourself permanently.

Put in a new fuel pump car still won't start has a security light on what do we do to get it started

If the Security Light is on but is not flashing, the security system is fine. If the security light is flashing then turn the ignition key to the run position (do not start). Wait over ten minutes and then try to start the engine. After the ten minutes you should notice that the light stopped flashing. If the engine starts then you do have a problem with the Passlock Security System.

I had my ignition cylinder & housing replaced now my car won't start. How do I reset the passlock system so my car will start

Hello, Try this: Get in car, turn the key to start, when it don't start let key come back to run (do not turn off) The security light should be blinking, let car set for about ten minutes or until security light stays on steady at that time turn key off for 10 seconds then turn back on (do not go to start) security light will be blinking again wait 10 minutes and security light should go out. Turn key off, wait 10 seconds . Turn key on (do not go to start) security light will be blinking again, wait 10 minuets and security light will go out. AT THIS TIME TURN KEY OFF FOR 10 SECONDS THEN START THE CAR.

My 2001 alero dont start. the security light came on. I will like to know if the security light is what is not letting the car start

if your security light flashing it will not start. you let it flash for 10 to 15 min then it should stop. turn the key off then try to start the car. if it does start you need a ignition lock cylinder

Car lights and everything goes on, but the car will not start

turn key from off to the on postiton. does the security light blink?
if so leave in on postition until light stops blinking (10min) then try to start car. may have to repeat process up to three times.
if the security re-learn process works, you will need a new ignition cylinder with security sensor. if not local gm dealer can tell you for sure.

2000 Alero Security light flashing and wont start

With the new lock cylinder in it, turn the key on. The security light should blink. Leave the key on for 10 minutes, the security light will quit blinking and go out after 10 min. This will reprogram your security system and the car should start. Also leave a battery charger on it while the key is on, If the battery goes dead during the 10 minute reprogram sequence, you will have to start over again.
