Hello first thing get a flat block of wood 2x6 or 2x12and a floor jack get car ramps under the rear tires use jack stands for safety get the jack under your tank with a piece of wood snug dont crush the tank remove your straps that support the tank also the clamp at your filling tube work the tank down while letting the jack down better off with a helper much easier now at the top[ of the tank you need to remove fuel lines (make sure there is no pressure release at the fuel rail from your shrader valve) emmision lines, wires now take your tank out its easier to pour the gas out of the tank into pails its more managerable to work on at the top there is a lock ring it has flat spots that lock under 3 or 4 ears you want to tap the ring off so the small stops are going away from the ear use a copper or brass flat edged chisel or punch spray some wd40 on ring to help once the ring is removed your sending unit fuel pump assembly lifts straight up dont bend the float arm take it out on a angle that works now once you go to reassemble get your area clean where the rubber gasket sits on dont drop dirt or rust in your tank take some blue grease or lithium grease on the rubber so ithelps with the friction now insert unit back in tank install lock ring push down and get it started under the flat ears make sure all the sides are under now tap it to the locking position till it bottoms out on the stops reinstall all lines hoses jack back up install your straps take jack out leave on ramps have somone put the key to on position check for leaks and fuel pump sound if okay then drop down goodluck please rate

I have a 1984 XJ6 4.2 liter and need to change the fuel Tank inlet strainers where are they located and how do I change them

Hi
To my knowledge there's usually a plate bolted down either under the back seat or maybe in the boot/trunk if you locate and remove that it will allow you to access the sender unit for the fuel tank which the Micro filters are attached to, the sender unit usually unscrews anticlockwise or they can be bolted with several little bolts, be careful when removing the sender unit as there quite easy to damage
I hope this helps Nick
