1999 Ford Explorer, sluggish or stalls in Drive

When I put the vehicle into drive, I am unable to get the vehicle to move above 2 mph, then when you push on the accelerator it will stall out. The vehicle does fine in reverse, park and neutral when pushing on the accelerator, it only happens in drive. Is this a sensor, the transmission, or something entirely different?

Check the speed sensor on the power steering and replace if it fails to increase engine speed when the wheel is turned.

duck tape on the air intake. I just fixed mine. There is a crack on the intake that lets too much air in when you put it in drive that makes the car stall. Try it it works.

you should check the all vacuum hoses starting at the egr valve. if the vaccum hoses are soft they will collapse and stall the van.

SOURCE: Stalls at low speed when in cruise control

You sould have recieved a "recall" notice in the mail about the cruise control for fire and failure issues. they are adding a fusable link where the cruise control harness connects to the brake master cylinder. if you have not had the recall performed yet you should SERIOUSLY consider getting it done, mainly so it doesnt catch fire, but "could" be the result of the failure you've been experiancing! btw, almost ALL Ford vehicles have been affected with the cruise control recall. hope this helps!

1999 Ford Explorer. Why does my car "shimmy" above 50 mph.

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to model category.

It could be so many things. Look at the YouTube channel called 'Just Rolled In'. United States vehicles in terrible condition being driven into garages all across America.

It could be so many things and needs to be put up on a hoist and checked. In no particular order.

Loose wheel lugs or only 1 wheel lug
bald tires
over inflated or under inflated tires
deformed tires with bulges,
wheels out of balance
bent rims
worn tie rod ends
worn wheel bearings
broken suspension springs
failed shock absorber struts
rusted out parts on anything holding the wheels
worn sway bar bushes (called 'sway bar' for good reason)

Not an exhaustive list, but likely one of the above.

2000 Ford Explorer Sport, drive cycle?

All in the link, but this is it. Also good to use a bottle of Fuel System Cleaner

I wanted to post this on here because a Ford technician was nice enough to give me this information. Here is what needs to be done to load all the parameters in your computer so your vehicle will pass inspection after your check engine light problem has been fixed. This will work for all explorers 1996 and up. Here is what you do. This will save you from having to drive 3 or 4 hundred miles to load the computer.....

1. The gas has to be between 1/4 and 3/4 full. Not above or below.

2. Start the vehicle and put it in drive and hold the brake.

3. Turn on the air conditioner and the rear defroster.

4. Sit in drive for 2 minutes.

5. Turn off AC and rear defroster.

6. Drive the vehicle up to 55 mph.

7. Decelerate down to 20 MPH, do not touch the gas or the brake.

8. You must do this 3 times and let the vehicle get cold between cycles.

I did this today and my vehicle passed inspection. I hope this helps others that need to get their rigs inspected and don't want to drive around for a couple hundred miles.....

Rough idiling, stalls when putting in2 drive, sluggish,

Sounds like a misfire or a bad valve. If this isn't what your looking for please let me know. The more information and details, the better. The vehicles maintenance history, "Engine Light" status (on or off), what tests you have run, and anything that you have noticed. Rough idle issues can be caused by more than one type of failure. Examples: clogged fuel or air filter, stuck/damaged EGR valve, restriction inside exhaust, spark plugs, timing, or low fuel pressure. There are more examples but it would be better if you could tell me more. Good luck.

Does my 2003 ford explorer sport have front wheel drive, rear wheel drive or all wheel drive. my email is [email protected]

it is most likely an automatic awd, 4 hi is full time 4 wheel drive, 4 lo is full time 4 wheel drive but at a very low gear ratio and should not exceed 25 mph or could cause damage. and DO NOT shift into 4 lo while vehicle is in motion. Auto is a 2 wheel drive but automatically engages into 4 wheel drive under heavy acceleration.

Steering shuttering 1999 ford explorer

This is usually caused from air in the power steering system. On more then one occasion i've experienced this after doing a brake job or an alignment. Because you turn the wheels with out the engine running you move power steering fluid throughout the system aerating it. The fix is to simply turn the wheel lock to lock repeatedly with the engine on and parked. This will "bleed" the system. Oddly Explorers are the only vehicle i've ever seen this happen to. Unfortunately it looks like you replaced the wheel bearing needlessly.
