What exactly do you need to know?? This is a very straight forward job, all that is really required are common hand tools and perhaps a star/Torx female socket for the U-Joint bolts U clamp nuts and very strong arms or a helper is great. Of course you will need to jack the truck off the ground as far as possible or use a car lift (preferred method), Use jack stands to support the truck, it really hurts when a car or truck falls on you! Rememeber safety first!! On a car lift I've removed a transfer case in less than 20 minutes to replace a seal.

Get a repair manual for a step-by-step process. Haynes or Chilton manuals cost about $25. at parts stores. Libraries have good repair reference materials. Alldata/DIY has an online repair service ($26.95 subscription cost for 1 year, 1 vehicle) that is excellent-more diagnostics and troubleshooting flow-charts than a repair manual.
Good luck.

Not too difficult, a little time consuming. Start by removing drivelines from transfer case, then the case is ready to unbolt and remove-BUT get the manual.

For 4x4 gmc sonoma is the 4 wheel drive light is always supposed to be on

It's only suppose to be on when the 4WD is in use and should be off when in 2WD. If the light is on, replace the 4WD switch on top of the transfer case, drivers side. You can pick up the vacuum switch at Auto Zone, Napa for around $25.00 and is common to fail. When they fail, the vacuum to the front axle hub actuator will stay engaged and the axle will always be engaged. it's a simple fix and should take you 15min to replace if you can get under the Sonoma with out jacking it up off the ground.

Disconnect the vacuum line from the switch and unscrew the switch out from the transfer case with a 3/4 inch wrench i believe. No need to worry about Teflon tape, the switch is tapered and will not leak fluid.

Good luck and thank you for using Fixya.

94 Sonoma 4x4 won;t lock into 4WD.

yea its not shifting again like before ? sounds like your transfer case solonoid has possably gone bad again .. these are a sometimes dont work item .. It is what shifts the transfer case into gear and it might be a little worn or weathered and not letting the switch kick it in gear all the way from the N position. thanks Jerry holler if you need more.

1998 gmc sonoma push button 4x4 busting diaphram vacuum actuator

On top of the transfer case is a vacuum switch with 3 vacuum lines connected to it. This switch controls when vacuum is applied to the vacuum actuator. This switch can fail partly and allow fluid from the transfer case to be sucked up into the vacuum lines and anything connected to them as well. When you replaced the actuator before, did you notice any oily fluid inside of it?
