Just noticed this on Son's truck. When 4WD is selected and vehicle starts to roll, there's a noise from the frontend that sounds like lifters rattling on an engine low on oil. No noise in 2WD. 4WD drive seems to work, as one can hit the gas on slippery surfaces and truck will take off like a 4WD vehicle should. I'm at a loss as to the newer stuff as the only 4WD I've owned was a '76 Ford F250 4X4. Well, other than my '85 Subaru BRAT.

if noise is higher pitched and coming in on valve time...(2wice for every revolution of motor..ie: faster)...then upper end pressure is down due to sludge, wear , lifter failure, valvespring failure, rocker stud lifting out of cylinder head (kinda common) cam bearings failing (very rare)..oil pump bypass stuck open..and a few other possibilities... respond and we will go over lower end sound (deeper ,slower) and see what identifies your issues .... miles

1. I would suggest that you engage your 4WD while you are in full stop and/or safe range of 5mph, however as claimed by the local dealers your vehicle is capable of engaging even while driving. Engage your 4WD while moving only when necessity requires.
2. That clicking noise while turning extreme right or left would be the birfield of your axle and would only mean your front hub is still engage even though you have disengaged transfer case.
Have your front hubs cleaned of old lubricants or grease due to non usage. dont use grease as lubricants, use thick oil such as gear oil or silicone oil. and use your 4WD every now and then.
Do this first then check if you still feel somtehing is loose on your suspension and others.

This is a somewhat common problem with the 04-06 MY 4x4 trucks.
The IWE vac solenoid can ingest water, and introduce it to the IWE, or can develop a problem where it does not keep constant vac on the IWE ends, and the gears hang part in ( grinding ).
You can check the IWE solenoid to make sure it will supply VAC to the IWE ( vac keeps the IWE out, remove vac, and the spring will engage it into the gears ).
You can check the vac lines to the IWE, and the solenoid, but I hate to say the IWE solenoid needs to be replaced.
Here is a link to a PDF version of the TSB with the part number for the updated IWE solenoid that the 07& 08 MY trucks have.

Here is a block diagram of the IWE layout, so you can check the vac lines. Hope it is as easy as a cracked vac line. Also check that the vent tubes are clear, and still up into the engine compartment.

put a ground strap from your transfer case to your transmission. also with someone listening under the car with the key on but not running put your foot on the brake, shift to neutral and turn the selecter to 4x4 low and see if you can hear the actuater respond

i just bought a BII with famous tick..........oil pressure light came on (no gauge). I installed mechanic gauge and showed 5 psi so I decided to replace oil pump. Pulled pan off (not fun!) the pickup tube was clogged and the was part of the timing chain tensioner in pan. I then pulled timing cover off only to find chain streched and the chain guide and tensioner pretty much gone. I think tick was chain slap..........will know for sure in a couple days.

Should add that it's a 2006 GMC Canyon, V6,Auto.
Found it... Son was doing an oil change and while under the truck he looked around.
Found that a heatshield had fell off and was laying on the driveshaft for the front diff. Removed the piece and no more noise.
Gotta Love easy and free fixes....
