There is a replaceable rubber seal in the oil cap. The dealer is supposed to replace it every oil change. The stock ones are around $0.40 and an almost lifetime one is available for $10 from IPD. Are you certain it is the Oil cap leaking from the seal or is the PCV system clogged?

Well glad to help, I would replace the oil cap seal anyway if it has not been done in a while.
An easy way to determine the PCV issue is to remove the oil dipstick with the engine running and see if mist is coming out then put your thumb over it and hold for 5 seconds or so then remove if pressure built up then you should probably clean or replace the PCV trap. Which I can guide you through if need be. I like to go the most inexpensive routes first.

Just purchased a 96 volvo 850 took it for an oil change. after the oil change the car overheated and thought it was the reservoir cap. but the pressure is just to much and even the new cap leaks wat

Hi
Look for a leak in the cooling system. If your radiator or cylinder head seem to be compromised, or if you open the coolant reservoir and the levels are topped up, you may have a leak in the cooling system. If you're experienced with cars, check the radiator, core plugs in the engine block, or cylinder head near the head gasket for any signs of leakage.
  • If you don't know your way around cars, consider bringing your car to the nearest mechanic and ask them to pressure-test the cooling system. Pressure-testing the cooling system is relatively easy to do; you may even get it free of charge.

have you checked your oil if it looks like gravey on the dip stick or the oil fill cap could be a blown head gasket stick something under the car to show a leak like cat litter park over top of it and see if you have a leak over night dont try this if its going to rain of course

Water leak from cooling system, carn't see a water leak and have tried a bottle of rad weld, but its still loosing around a litre of water to every 50 miles. Any suggestions for self repair and where to...

If there isn't water obviously appearing from somewhere it's either a head gasket failure or radiator cap. Check the oil filler cap for emulsion. Just hope that it's the radiator cap.

740 Oil Cap Leaking, Lots of Oil

presuming the oil is coming from around the filler cap..theres usualy a rubber seal around the base, these can become brittle and break, sometimes quite a large piece (1/4 inch) can break off making a fair old leak from the oil splashing around from the cam, replace it with a NEW one, should cure problem

Leaking oil from oil cap

The problem is there is to much crank case pressure, make sure the PCV ( positive crankcase ventalation) valve is working correctly.

850 coollink leak

If leaking on the driver's side, check the heater hoses - two connections at the firewall, and two on the block. You'll have to remove the air intake box and hoses to see these.

If leaking on the passenger side, check the coolant reservoir for cracks or splits, and the small hose coming from the reservoir. Only other thing that could be leaking on this side of the car is the water pump -- It should appear that coolant is coming from behind the timing belt cover if this is the case.

If it is the water pump, go ahead and have the timing belt and tensioner done at the same time...should be no additional labor. Expect most shops to charge at least 6 hrs for this job + parts. 850s are pretty tight on that end of the engine, so it might be best to take it to someone familiar with Volvos. Hopefully there is an independent Volvo specialist in your area, as their labor rate is usually around half that of the dealer.
