1993 Chevrolet K1500 Logo
Anonymous Posted on Nov 29, 2011

I recently bought a 1993 Chevrolet K1500. It had the factory radio in dash, but the cassette player and under dash amplifier were gone. I bought both of these from salvage. In doing so, I noticed a single white wire coming from the back of the am/fm radio that led to a green wire (connected by a black clip) below. During installation of the under dash amp, I was unable to find the green wire with the clip to connect to the white wire from the radio. This wire is out from the cluster. It is seperate and apart from the cluster of wires going to the amp. Can you please tell me what this wire is for and where I need to connect it to get my radio to work? Thank you!

Hello! First of all what does not work correctly? Reason i ask is older wiring can mislead as the color ages...That single white wire from the radio MAY be faded Orange...In that there isn't a white wire involved with the radio...Also can you further identify the green wire (dark or light?) or is this the one that's missing? Lastly what is a "Clip"? Do you mean a connector plug?...send a comment ...Guru...saailer

This is the older radio where there is an am/fm radio above the climate control and a cassette player in the center of the dash. The wire harness from the am/fm radio ends in a clip that plugs into the in-dash amp. From this clip, comes a single "white" wire. I will look more closely to see if it is a faded orange. This single wire ended in a clip that connected to a dark green wire. I went to a salvage yard today and looked at a 94 c1500, tracing this wire through dash to the connector plug just to the right of the hood release pull. It was where you plug the computer readers into the car's computer system. Only thing is my 93 does not have a green wire coming out of this connector plug. The buttons illuminate when the head lights are on, but will not power on.

The connector plug by the hood release pull
is referred to as the Assembly Line Communication Link (ALDL) connector.

I also was wondering about the white wire...yes it is definately white and it clips into a black connector on a dark green wire, I am putting an after market stereo into my k1500 and was wondering if this was a ground.

Paul, did you ever find out if the white wire is ground?, It has a small black connector on it, I assume its a ground as well, let me know what you found out.

Hello! The ALDL or On Board Diagnostic I (OBDI) connector is located under the dash on a 1993...And is different then the 94 you looked at...See diagram below...Is there a wire on "A" and "B"? "A" is a White/Black wire that changes to Black/White at the ALDL connector on pin "A"...and should read to ground..."B" is data and is Orange...These are the two wires that are shorted with a paper clip to get the trouble light to "blink" out a trouble code...I DO NOT see a connection between the fault that you have and the ALDL connector, Although the connector may be missing a wire (easily checked)...LETS SOLVE!!!

The problem appears to be be a lack of a connection to the Yellow ignition wire which could appear White...It's the ACC ignition power to the radio...Just because the lights are on doesn't mean the radio itself has power from the ignition...Also The Orange ignition wire (hot at all times) maintains memory to the radio...The White? wire out out the back of the radio appears to be the ignition wire...If there is already a Yellow wire connected to the radio plug that has 12 volts on it when the key is turned to ACC let me know...

Bottom line...Are there wires in both slots of the under dash ALDL connector??? And is there a splice into the Yellow ignition wire...SEND A COMMENT .saailer

WIRING FOR 16164325 DELCO RADIO

That is not a radio. That is a control head. The 7 wires carry data to the radio brain which on this trucks is a silver box located directly above the gas pedal. These trucks also had an optional cassette player/ cassette and eq unit that was mounted in the center of the dash that also connected to the radio brain as well.

Where in the hell does the antenna wire plug into on a 1990 chevy k1500 with factory radio, did not see a place on equalizer or radio itself.

In most cases the antenna plug directly into the back of the radio. But GM came up with this crazy 3 piece stereo system. You have the display/selector, the tape deck/EQ, and the tuner. The antenna will be pluged into the tuner which is buried deep into the dash above the acceleator slightly to the right. I have installed close to 100 stereos and this threw me for a loop. Follow the tape deck/eq wiring harness to find it. Happy hunting.

Plastic box of wires to big for my new cd player after taking my old cassette player out

You wll need a stereo installation adapter kit. This will change the dash opening to the size you need, oftentimes by replacing an entire dash panel for a factory look.
