Depending on the specification of your vehicle, the FOB generally serves one (or both) of the following functions:
1) Communicate with the vehicle's Keyless Entry system (operates central locking).
2) When inserted into the ignition, the transponder within the key will communicate with the vehicle's Body computer (BEM) to validate entry, before disengaging the immobilizer - allowing the vehicle to start.
When the key fob fails, you may lose functionality of the above systems.
Keyless entry failure - usually due to flat battery in the fob. Reprogramming of keyless entry can be done without dealership assistance.
Transponder/Immobilizer failure - this requires the key fob to be re-programmed by your local dealership.
