I have a 2000 jaguar s-type, cooling fan comes on without engine overheating. Is it radiator fan relay or the cooling fan relay that i need to replace?
Your vehicle's OBD computers monitor all functions of your vehicle's electrical circuits.
Do not replace anything just yet.
Have your computer codes read by your local dealership (takes approx. 15mins) - this will immediately identify the suspected circuit and/or components.Your vehicle's OBD computers monitor all functions of your vehicle's electrical circuits.

Either the temp sensor is bad, or the relay is bad. or the fan motor is bad. Or you have a blown fuse. Look for fuse first.... To test if fan motor is bad disconnect the connector to the fan and jumper it to the battery.if it spins it's good. the other two. use a component locator to find their location and replace. they are inexpensive. Temp sensor is in the cooling circuit (radiator...maybe next to thermostat) the relay will be in a fuse box under the hood.
check for low coolant level make sure coolant system been bleed from air.make radiator full coolant and coolant reservoir on the full cold mark.if all is good the cooling fan relay could be bad or the engine coolant temperature sensor could be faulty.
This can be cause by a few things, the first thing to check would be with a cold engine open coolant cap, this may be on the radiator or the plastic bottle, make sure cooling system is full.
the next thing is to see if the fans come on when temp start to go past 3/4 on temp or if digital at 220.
the rest would need a shop to check. a bad coolant temp sensor or fan relay/module and last thermostat.
REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.CHECK MECHANICAL COOLING FAN.SHOULD HAVE RESISTANCE WHEN TURN WITH HAND.IF FREEWHEELS FAN CLUTCH NEED TO BE REPLACED.CHECK TO MAKE SURE AUXILIARY ELECTRIC COOLING FAN RUNNING HOT WIRE COOLING FAN IF FAN RUNS.YOU HAVE FAULTY THERMO SWITCH LOCATED AT THE BOTTOM OF RADIATOR ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE ON 4 CYLINDER ENGINE FOR V6 ENGINE THERMO SWITCH LOCATED ON THE LOWER RADIATOR HOSE ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. CHECK FOR BLOWN COOLANT FAN FUSE OR FAULTY RELAY.IF THE AUXILIARY ELECTRIC FAN DONT RUN WHEN HOT WIRED THE ELECTRIC FAN FAULTY.
The fans are actuated by coolant temp in the radiator. It is possible to have overheated coolant in the radiator, causing the steam, and your engine not overheating...the temp sensor for your engine is reflecting the engine temp, not the temp of the coolant in the radiator. You problem could be a bad temp sensor at the radiator...not allowing the fans to come on. Good Luck! I hope you find this to be very helpful!
Make sure the cooling fans are coming on.And most important bleed the air out of the cooling system. When it is cooling correctly, the cooling fans will come on,and then they will go off, when the engine has cooled down.
This Could Be a NUMBER or Things.
1 Thermostat Sticking CLOSED.
2. Coolant Level LOW
3. LEAK in COOLING SYSTEM
4. If you have a 2 FAN System 1 Could Be Faulty
5. CLOGED / CORRODED INSIDE of RADIATOR
6. Radiator Dirty In the FRONT of it Restricting AIRFLOW
replace your cooling fan motor relay because if you dont eventually your radiator will explode and this will cause your engine block to crack and then if your fan isn't blowing the engine will continue to overheat and the engine will seize and then you need a new engine. A cooling fan motor relay is around $30.
It could be the program in the ECM where it may run for a few min before it's commanded by the ECM to shut down or the other thing is the radiator fan Relay may be bad and is sticking in the close loop position and needs to be replaced. A bad Relay may get stuck in the open loop and your not going to have an cool fan working, causing overheating in stop and go traffic. Good luck and hope this helps.
