Can't release hood latch

The release will not let hood open far enough to lift and open secondary latch. I can hear it click and I can push down slightly and it catches again, but it does not lift really at all. Need OIL soon!!!!

can't release primary hood latch using inside handle even using pliers to try to take up slack

I was able to release it in a similar manner, While someone else pulled lever, I jiggled hood when it opened I put a little oil on it and exercised it.

When I pull on the hood latch inside the car, it pulls up but nothing happens. It won't release so that I can open the hood from the outside of the car.

My 1999 LeSaber was having the same issue when I first bought it. My brother suggested I gently press and release on the hood after pulling the lever inside, this caused the latch to release. It stopped sticking after about 3-4 times of opening it this way. I suspect that some corrosion was jogged loose with the tapping.

Front Hood won't latch shut

Try lubricating the latch and check your cable inside and make sure its in the right position, the latch wont pop again by pulling cable unless you get a Philips screwdriver and push down on the latch where the hood shuts, when it shuts it pushes that spring loaded lever over and latches. Yours is not latching because either is rusted and sticking, cable is out of position causing it to pull all the time or the hood just isn't going down far enough to latch, possibly something in the way.

Have someone push down on the hood over the hood latch area while you pull the release, that may work. Once it is open lube everything up with white Lithium grease also known as "LUBRIPLATE:"

Hi Mark, If you lift the hood with your right hand once it has been released from the release lever inside the cabin, around the centre of the hood you will feel (and if you stoop down, you can see) the safety locking latch, which is released by pushing the lever upwards. This operation is carried out as you stand in front of the vehicle and lift the hood allowing that space. Regards John

The hood latch cable pulls a lever over towards driver's side of car to open the hood. Pulling the lever releases the hood latch.
This is the lever that is not moving over far enough to release, and the one you need to get to. You are right to think of removing the grill. Is it easy to remove? Often, someone can lay underneath and reach up with a prying tool (a screwdriver) and push that lever over. But if it's too far to reach, or if it's obstructed by parts or support pieces, just remove the grill to reach the latch.

My hood release is nor working and my hood will not opoen

Most cars have a hood release in the cabin of the car near the driver's seat. When you pull it, you'll hear the hood pop open. However, there is usually a secondary latch that is under the hood that you have to press in order to be able to lift the hood up. Have you tried this?

have someone help u by pushing down on hood while u pull lever or use a hook up under grill to push or pull on latch release the lever may be bent enough so that its not pulling the latch far enough to release

1998 astro van secondary hood latch will not release

it can be unbolted,but it sounds like your primary latch could be giving you problems. have some one play with the hood release (pushing and pulling) while you release secondary latch and pull up on hood. if you get it open spray all moving parts with wd40.

Hood release problem

Hi JP,

Unfortunately no. There are two things to try though.

If when you pull the release it feels as though the latch is releasing (without the hood rising), try pushing the hood down (relatching), giving it a sharp rap right above the latch or prying the hood up.

If when you pull the release nothing happens:
Get a flashlight and a long set of needlenose pliers.
Look through the front grill and locate the latch. You should be able to find the release cable. Grab it with the needle nose and pull it away from the latch. You'll hear it release.

Be patient, you'll get it.
