Safer is to use 'carburetor cleaner' which is also flammable but a little less dangerous than using gasoline. After sitting a long time, our modern gasoline gets tired; never allow something to sit so long without adding some 'fuel stabilizer.'If possible with your car, I would drain (siphon) the tired gas out and replace it with a few gallons of fresh.
Really tough starting problems can also be overcome with 'starting fluid' which is pure ether and very flammable.Any of these may require the removal of the engine air filter so the liquid gets into the intake manifold.
Stale gasoline can also gum up the fuel injectors which may have to be removed for service if none of the fluids causes the engine to fire.

remove all the sparkplugs and turn the engine over by just the starter for a few seconds to get oil pumping as you do this, look for any fluids to "pump" out of the spark plug holes..see if any antifreeze or oil shoots out..this liquid will stop the engine from turning over but it can be blown out..also the starter solenoid may not be working if the engine does not engage at all, try connecting a 10 ap charger to the vehicle in place of the battery,,and listen for a buzzing or humming this may indicate a rusted solid relay somewhere ..locate and replace it..what year of car...repost please..

Car won't start 2003 Dodge Stratus sxt coupe cranks but won't start what could b the problem? I tried spraying starting fluid in the air system but it still won't start!

i would check and see if spark pluges are firing. you can take one out and plug into spark plug wire then let the bottom of the plug sit on engine and get someone to try to start while you look at the plug to see if there is any fire. if you have no fire or fuel it would be the crankshaft sencer. it could be the timing belt but the motor would sound different turning over then it used to.

Why won't my 1997 Saturn SL start?

you have spark at the plugs ..thats something

spray stay you mug
into the throttle body see if the motor will cough

tank needs draining and have fresh fuel
fuel pump has a filter and fuel relay

crack the fuel line connection to the rail to see if there is fuel reaching the rail and correct pressure

if sitting 6 years.. not being run regularly
do a compression test
lifters may be stuck
rings may have lost tension

The 1990 XJ6 has been sitting for the last 2 years and now won't start. The engine turns over fine. The dash gages don't seem to operate. I filled the gas tank with 5 gallons of premium gas. HELP!!!

I wish I could give you an instant fix, but I can't. Do you have spark? If so then its either your fuel pump or the CPS, crank position sensor. If no spark then it could be your coil.

if it hasnt been ran for 2 years, i would drain the gas. put some 90 octane gas into it with some fuel injector cleaner if it still dont start, check the fuel pressure by disconnecting the quick connector from the fuel rail should have 35-40 lbs of pressure if it is way low or none fuel pump is bad

2yahoo.comlet xj8l sit idle not starting it for 1 year i think gasoline varnished

There could be many reasons why the car won't start. If you are correct about the gas, and the injectors aren't clogged, Syphening out the old gas, adding fresh premium gas, and having a helper spray starting fluid in short bursts into the air filter intake while you turn the engine over should start the car. Good Luck.
