Thick white smoke out of tailpipe. No power loss. smells like oil burning
1991 Z71. The smoke stops when doing 70 on the freeway but when I slow down it starts smoking again. I think it may be rings. Where should I start looking to find the problem

If youre wondering about a blown head gasket or cracked head, smell your exhaust. If it smells like anti freeze then youre right. If not, you have a coolant leak and your car is burning oil from one reason or another. Check your oil also. Usually when head gasket goes bad you will get water in the oil. The oil will start getting creamy after a while....if it looks like it has water in it, it probably does.
White smoke is coolant burning. If the smoke has a blue tint to it that is oil burning. If the smoke has a grey tint that is excess fuel. Any way you look at it, I think a trip to your local garage is in order for an accurate diagnosis.
The key is how much smoke? Does the smoke have a smell to it. Are you consuming any fluids, like coolant, or oil?
Tons White smoke that is sweet smelling is usually coolant getting into the combustion chamber.
Less white smoke, especially if other cars are doing it, is normal. For every gallon of gas that you burn, you generate a gallon (GALLON) of water. so this water usually evaporates, but sometimes not. It has little or no smell.
If the smoke is bluish white, that is oil, but usually your converter would fill with oil, and cause error codes, or loss of power. This smell is distinct, but not necessarily sweet.... After the converter heats up, it may be able to burn off the oil and the smoke stops.
What are you consuming, fluid wise, will direct where you go next.
A new turbo charger is about $340, but you can buy the bearings and seals and rebuilt if yourself for about $100 http://turbosandparts.com/ It is not hard, and it does not take long to do.
I normally do not bother with synthetic, but with a turbo charger, it might be worth it. What really seems to ruin turbo chargers the most is not letting them cool off before parking. Once you turn off the engine, there is no longer any cooling, so the build up heat will burn up the oil and seals. Run the engine for at least 5 minutes below turbo levels, before shutting down the engine.
White smoke on startup could be a head gasket leak between the water jacket and the cylinder. Won't always show in the oil. Antifreeze makes it smell oily or sweet. Compression test will tell for sure. Bluish is oil that was burned. White is usually water or oil into exhaust after combustion.
The white smoke is from anti freeze. The smell of gas in your oil is probably from the same cause. I do beleive you did not clean the milled ares good enough before installing one or both of your gaskets. Just in case you did loosen one of the head bolts up for any reason....One bolt I do beleive on the right front bank of this engine has to be also sealed before re enstalling it for coolant will pass through it if not sealed
GM is my expertise, but white smoke, is white smoke. If it doesnt go away on warm up , also is thick maybe sweet smelling, soundsl like coolant ( antifreeze) is getting into the combustion chamber and burning out through the exhaust, Could be a blown head gasket or cracked head etc. Hope this helps
You are smelling burning antifreeze. likely a head gasket but only testing will determine that for sure...Do not drive it. get it to a shop or more damage is likely.
hi its not the egr valve white smoke indicates water combined with loss of power indicates headgasket oil blow back faulty pcv or piston rings worn yates210456
