We bought our 1998 montero sport used and it did not have the owners manual with it and the A/T light has come on the dash and I dont know what it means. It came on when the battery went dead. I changed the battery and replaced all the belts on the car. I also changed the front brake pads. Now the A/T, battery, and brake light's are on. WHAT COULD THE PROBLEM BE? I,m not an IDIOT and I know how to change all these parts and have done so on all my other vehicles but have never had this problem before. I have checked the belts and they are still on and working and the tension is right. The connection on the battery is goog, clean and tight. The brake fluid level is also good. WHAT IN THE WORLD AM I MISSING??? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

check the fuse box on the driver side of the car underneath the dash near the door the fuse is probably blown
SOURCE: car over heating but no
there could be several reasons for this.#1 the theromostat is stuck closed.(the quickest way to check this is to get the engine to operating tempature, if the upper radiator hos is cold your thermostat is not open and needs replacing.#2your cooling fans are not operating.( you should have 12 volts going to the cooling fans and you have fuses/relays that allow this. they are located in the junction box located under the hood to check the relay just have the engine at operating temp and then switch the relay( i use the a/c clutch relay to swap with) if the fan kicks on then you know it was the relay/fuse. If it doesn't it could be the fan is bad ot the temp sensor on the fan is defective.#3poor circulation ofcoolant.(the water pump has to circulate properly in order to to keep the engine cooled down. If all the other componants check out then i suspect that the water pump needs replacement. You will also have to power wash the radiator. Bugs, dirt and road grime restrict the flow of air over the coils and fins of the radiator thus not allowing the the heat to be dispersed properly. please rate the solution......thanks

the tensioner keeps the tension, change it and your problem should be solved
SOURCE: Mitsu Montero Sport '02 engine stalls but not when air cond is on.
hi there. the reason that the engine idles good when the air-con is engaged is that ussually all vehicles nowadays have a vacumm advance mechanism. this is triggered mainly by a electric solenoid valve which is also attached parallel to the source supplying power to compressor. a small vacumm hose with a diameter like a common pencil or ballpen case. its made of rubber and it runs from the alternator vacumm pump then to the solenoid valve and to the vacumm advancer unit attached to the injection pump throttle. this system raises the idle a tad higher.
if your montero runs completely normal and you experience no other problems with your engine except for your present problem, then the solution is just raising the idle a little higher. if your montero is equiped with a RPM guage on the dash, try adjusting the idle to around 800 rpms. it would be healthier for your car if the idle raises a bit when you engage the air-con because this would compensate for the added load on your engine.
hope this helps.
SOURCE: 1998 montero sport is blowing out heavy white
If your engine is producing white smoke this is anti-freeze making its way in to the cylinders. I highly recommend NOT running it until corrected. Have a compression check run to find where problem is and correct. Hopefully just blown head gasket, possible though cracked, warped head. If you feel a confident mechanic you can do this on your own, otherwise you'll need to take it to a shop for repais : (
Sorry, wish I had better news,
Tom
