Code P0740 - Torque Convertor Clutch Circuit Failure. My 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited has CEL on, code is P0740. Dealership wants to replace front pump, torque convertor, and possibly transmission. Is there any other fix that would proceed this?

ok, think like a TCM AND WIN, the TCM commands tcc lock, if the the tail shaft rpm fails to drop, then tcc is bad,or the transmission slips, its just very stuupiid micro, and cant really know,, which ? this is hints ,not found in most poor books, check the tcc wire for lockup command first. is just a 12vdc wire,no encrypted serial data, or other magic,

Find a local ASE shop and pay for full diagnosis.
answer, assumes real scan tool used an no other DTCs !!!
fresh AFT and filter? dah? hope happens. levels
do the FSM stall tests fail,? do the FSM stated, line pressure test pass? dah 1,2,3 factors. (basics all every one)
did they check he voltages in to the tranny first to the tcc lockup
solenoid.
a true tech does that;.
even better (no trans p/n ) stated by you, lets do the path end to end. there is a test at each point. (almost)
TCM brain decides to engage TTC (Lock main clutch)
some cars (diff.trans) have a relay here, and it energizes,
and send more powerful 12vdc to trans.
12vdc arrives,at trans port, (not if corroded)
and then arrives at the tcc solenoid, we check this too ,pan off
we then check ohms of this soleniod, 10 to 35 is my guess, and if
infinity bingo, new solenoid time.
the solenoid can be bench tested. too. if good
if all is good here, the lock it self is bad. major deal.
id never assume trans is bad unless all tests are done.

the big book has, ON CAR service.
now the Tcm BRAIN
WHAT IF it did not command ttc lockup at all
what could be wrong, answer inputs to it are wrong.
the engine and trans gears and RPM (speeds) are used
to select tables that decide lockup is ok to use.
that is why I said use a real scan tool one that sees ALL
jeep,obd2, factory codes. like the Innova 3160 does.

does this help?

really , did you read the FSM yet: if not why not? why not read that, it covers all tests.to do. many are very simple, buy the book or get one used, ? yes there are tests. not fixes, there are 100s of parts there, in that slush pump. we do the tests and now know if problem is deap inside the best, we have a full video of this trans rebuild. good to show why its so expensive. long hard work.

P0740 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction Driving the vehicle with this problem and not attending to it asap may cause further damage. When you feel a problem and or see the engine light on, use your head wisely and have a reputable transmission shop go through a complete diagnostic procedure, in most cases this is a fluid problem, but since you serviced the trans that can be ruled out, if you haven't changed the TCC solenoid yet do so, I was unclear about what you replaced, I assume the shift solenoid's, if you have replaced the TCC solenoid then the problem is either in the wiring to the trans or inside the trans in the torque converter clutch circuit or the torque converter itself, which is a all to common failure in these Vans, if the TCC is ok replace the torque converter, that of course requires removing the trans, this job will require a lift, it is just about impossible on the ground.

1998 jeep grand cherokee 4x4. have the p0740 code. have to start from neutral, then shifts faily well. May start fluttering and making noise, have to put back to N, then to D and once again will shift. ...

P0740 JEEP - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit
Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Transmission shift shock
- Vehicle may not shift into the highest gear

Possible causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid valve
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness or connectors
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit is open or shorted

When is the code detected?
Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) unlocked for 10 sec., ECM commands converter lock-up and did not record engine speed drop.

P0740 JEEP Description
The torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, with the gear in D4, by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) in response to signals sent from the vehicle speed and the Engine Control Module (ECM). Lock-up piston operation will then be controlled. When the torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, the torque converter lockup clutch will engage creating a 1 to 1 RPM ratio between the transmission input shaft and the rotational speed of the torque converter.

Lock-up operation, however, is prohibited when A/T fluid temperature is too low.

When the accelerator pedal is depressed (less than 2/8) in lock-up condition, the engine speed should not change abruptly. If there is a big jump in engine speed, there is no lock-up.

Have a P0740 code showing up every couple days on my 2001 Grand Cherokee LTD with 110,000 miles, but vehicle runs fine

That code tells you that there is a problem with the transmission torque converter or the circuit that controls it. Does the rpm drop down at about 45mph or does it remain the same? Also, if you tap the brake do the rpm's go up for a moment? (that verifies it was engaged)

P0740 T Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction

The transmission fluid could be in need of a change, certain parts in the transmission depend upon clean fluid to move properly, this could cause the pressure sensor to fail and engage the torque converter to lock up at the right time. Timing is counted with the computer and it will flash lights when there is a problem.

Transmission light cod P0740

PO740 is a TCC/lockup code.TCC stands for Torque Convertor Clutch. In between the engine and transmission is a torque convertor.Inside the torque convertor is a clutch. This clutch engages to eliminate slippage inside the torque convertor. When a malfunction occurs in the system, which is activated by solenoids, and a computer,a TCC code will set. There is a diagnostic route specifically for that code,to determine if the malfunction is electrical, mechanical,or hydraulic.
