Is the trunk ajar indicator illuminated?

Install a scan tool.
Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
Close the rear compartment.
With a scan tool observe the trunk ajar switch signal input in the BCM data list.
Does the scan tool indicate the trunk ajar switch signal is active?
Go to Step 4

Disconnect the rear compartment lid ajar switch.
Is the trunk ajar indicator illuminated?
Go to Step 5

Repair a short to ground in the signal circuit of the rear compartment lid ajar switch. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 9

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the rear compartment lid ajar switch. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Does your car have a spoiler that was added on after the car was made? Sounds like to me that the brake light relay in the trunk could need replacing. When it starts giving you problems that light in the dash comes on. The relay is located if my memory serves me correct under the trunk cover on the driversside of the vehicle.More than likely you will need to get the new relay from the toyota dealer.

I have a 98 Camry and was having problems with tail lights and fuses. I kept blowing a fuse which was making my tail lights not work. I tried paying very close attention to when they would be working and all the sudden not be working. I know it sounded funny, but I told my mechanic that it seemed if I used my trunk, my fuse would blow. Come to find out, the wire was touching the hinges of my trunk. So when I popped my trunk and closed it, it blew my fuse every time.

open the trunk and look up along the top of the bumper and you should see two screws / nuts that secure the light assembly.

The jiggle method is not enough you have to look at the wires. I just did and I found out that all six wires were broken close to the splice. That splice is located close to the back seat.

wires are pinched and shorting together near the left (drivers side) trunk hinge. brake light power is feeding back through the reverse light wiring. this will also turn on the check engine light with a neutral safety switch malfunction code as the computer also sees this voltage in the reverse light circuit. Find and repair the wiring, pull the EFI fuse in the panel under the hood to clear the code. Hope this helps

wires are pinched or broken by the trunk hinge on the left side of the trunk. you may have to peel back some of the tape to see the damaged wires

Look at the wiring harness that runs along the hinge on the trunk lid, driver side. Camrys with lights on the trunk lid are know to break one of these wires.
