SOURCE: ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON WHILE DRIVING MERCEDES BENZ

The check engine light comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, the problem is in the emissions or something that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions, but other causes can trigger the light to come on, too. To determine the cause, the vehicle will need to be taken to AutoZone or a shop that has an OBD2 scanner, or for 1995 and earlier models, an OBD1 scanner, While a scanner will not give you the magic answer, it will give you a code that narrows down the problem area.

A flashing check engine light is an indication of a severe misfire or problem that is likely to harm your engine. Immediate diagnosis and service is needed.

Some specific causes for the light to be on are:

Gas cap left off, not tightened, not installed correctly, or needs to be replaced

02 sensor

Engine misfire - error might clear itself after 3 complete warm-up cycles; not restarts, but warm-ups

At start up for a bulb check - Should not stay on

Problem in the emission system, including clogged exhaust or the catalytic converter not functioning properly

Dirty/clogged air filter

Dirty MAF sensor

SOURCE: My C230 Mercedes has check engine light on. Car

P0171 indicates a lean condition. The most common cause of this is a defective mass air flow sensor. Also check if any vacuum leaks.Replace MAf sensor,if cleaning the MAF does not help.
Thanks.

P0172 - System Too Rich (Bank 1)
Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a rich condition (too little oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1.

Note: This DTC is very similar to P0175, and in fact your vehicle may show both codes at the same time.

Symptoms: You will more than likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms such as a misfire. This is the next code explained.

Causes: A code P0172 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
* The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters can cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled. There is also an issue with some vehicles where the MAF sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry.
* There could be a vacuum leak.
* There could be a fuel pressure or delivery problem

Possible solutions include:
* Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary
* Cleanthe MAF sensor. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling
* Inspect fuel lines for cracks, leaks, or pinches
* Check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail
* Check the fuel injectors, they may be dirty. Use fuel injector cleaner or get them professionally cleaned/replaced.
* Check for an exhaust leak before the first oxygen sensor (this is unlikely to cause the problem, but it is possible)

P0301 - Cylinder 1 One Misfire Detected
A P0301 code means that the the car's computer has detected that one of the engine's cylinders is not firing properly. In this case it's cylinder #1.

Symptoms may include:
* the engine may be harder to start
* the engine may stumble / stumble, and/or hesitate
* other symptoms may also be present

Causes: A code P0301 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
* Faulty spark plug or wire
* Faulty coil (pack)
* Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
* Faulty fuel injector
* Burned exhaust valve
* Faulty catalytic converter(s)
* Running out of fuel
* Poor compression
* Defective computer

Possible Solutions:
* If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.
* If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

Keep in mind that the "misfiring" are not only for bad O2 sensors, check the other componentes that I tell you before.

Keep us updated.

You will have to test the cylinder 1.The compression test have to be performed to confirm the fault.The actual compression test should show results like :-- Reading 150---155 on cylinders which are proper.If the compression test reading shows reading between 100 --- 125 then that particular cylinder is faulty.The compression & exhaust valve issue in the #1 cylinder.In this case check the spark plugs and the coil pack.If the coil pack is not giving enough voltage to any of the spark plugs then any of the cylinder getting connected to that plug will show error.The other possibility is cracked or worn out spark plugs. The cracked spark plug connectors can also cause this same error. ------------ But as you mentioned car running with out any stumble or hesitation then its quite clear that problem is at present not very major,but still get this possibilities checked.Get the compression test done,this will confirm the fault of compression valve.And also get spark plugs,coil pack and spark plugs connectors checked.------------------This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Check engine light flashing and car idling low. 2003 Passat V6 4Motion. Recently replaced the timing belt. Was told this is unrelated. Need to replace Cam Belt for cylinders 4,5, and 6

First things first. The check engine light is blinking because the engine is misfiring to a point that could damage the catalytic converter. If cylinder 4 5 & 6 are all misfiring i would check the engine timing belt for proper installation. These are the cylinders for the left bank of the engine. If the belt has jumped or was installed wrong this would explain the misfires. Unfortunately this is an interference motor which means there is a high probability if the belt is on wrong, the engine valves mat be damaged. I would perform a compression test on those cylinders to verify the belt condition. Hope this helps.

Check engine light and knocked off rockers

Running rough and misfiring is usually a one or more bad spark plug wires. Don't go back to that dealer. Replace the wires or have your mechanic do it for you. If you replace them, take one off at a time and install the new one. If you put the wires back on in the wrong order, it will misfire.

Random misfire/rough idle/stall

Low fuel pressure due to faulty fuel pump will give misfire codes due to fuel starving conditions. Have fuel pressure tested, preferably when running bad.

#5 cylinder misfire

I have a corolla and had #4 cylinder misfire also diagnosed at autozone. After changing the spark plugs, problem persisted, along with the same error code, so they recommended changing the spark plug wires, and that is what fixed it. I would have changed the rotor cap too, but was low on dough. Glad that was not the problem.
