The power switch for my 2000 outback wagon won't move the seat won't adjust forward or back it will only raise or lower the seat what do I need to do to fix this problem
So here is a diagram of the seat circuitry for your car. Since every other function works except the forward/backward slide function, that leaves basically the forward/backward slide motor, the seat switch, and/or the wiring. If you can verify that the wiring under the seat is in good condition without obstructions, chaffed wires, and/or wires pulled too tight, then it's safe to say it's down to just the motor and/or the switch. Sometimes if the passengers front seat has the same switch, you can plug it in to the drivers' side connector and see what works and what doesn't. If the seat works fine with the other switch, then that's all it needs, if not then it will need a motor. If the other seat doesn't have a switch then you can find them at wrecking yards, or just supply power and ground to the motor in question to see if it works. If it does, then you know you kneed a switch and if not then a motor.
I hope this info helps!~subyguru~

your seat uses motors to move the seat you have probably knocked the connector off one of your motors

I just
finished 'repairing' in my '00 Outback wagon, which moved forward
inconsistently, and never completely lifted the front edge of the seat up.
We like to move it back when we get out. Up to now, we had learned
we could move it forward by hitting it like a karate chop (not good) !
I removed the 4 bolts mounting the seat to the floor, tilted it back, popped
the toggle switch handle off & removed the 2 screws holding the side cover.
(I discovered the switch WORKED now!)
I then disconnected the switch harness & bent the plastic cover back far
enough to unscrew the switch from the inside. I inspected & spray-cleaned
the switch, & in re-installing discovered the switch front plastic lobe (or
knob) that snaps into the handle was loosening & finally broke off!
It works just using the rear lobe without the handle on.
I left it hanging beside the seat for now until I order another switch.
But, also, the rear inner screw that mounts the switch stripped during
attempted re-installation, which I will have to address.
Bottom
line: it was a mechanical failure, not an electrical one! I could
re-install without the handle & it would work. Ugly. Other
bottom line: this was my teacher-wife's commuter car, I am inheriting it this
summer when our new 2010 Prius arrives! It has 190,000 miles on it !

this is not uncommon and the test is very simple. The seat motor often fails in this vehicle and the simplest test is this: (1)raise the front of the seat as much as possible, (2)tap on the motor housing while holding the seat slide button (seat motor you need is the one easiest to reach in the front/bottom of the seat). If this resolves your problem what you need is a seat motor. Unfortunately these are often only available with a complete seat base system, so if this is the resolution you may want to search salvage yards, this piece can be easily replaced by itself.

The releases are located inside the seat back. This pic will give you a good idea of where to look for them. It's easier with 2 people, one pushing the releases and another lifting the head rest out. http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/download/file.php?id=1748&mode=view
