I am working on a 2004 volkswagon jetta 1.8L turbo, and am replacing the timing belt and I am looking for the top dead center mark on the flywheel and when I look at the markings thru the window on the transmission what marking do I look for, as i see knoches but which one am I setting it to? The camshaft sprocket is on the mark, but before I complete putting on the timing belt on I want to sent the crankshaft to top dead center. Also I took out the #1 spark plug and am checking when the pistion is at the top, but I understand that it can be at the top on the compression stroke and then on the exhaust stroke, so I want to make sure that I am setting it up on the correct mark.

There is only stroke to TDC, the piston goes up and down, that's it. Compression and Exhaust are part of the cycle when everything is timed. TDC is TDC, period.

SOURCE: Golf fti 8v, 1993 k- reg 2 E engine, Is the engine at tdc?

slide a straw or a pen into the plug hole and slowly rotate crank pully back and forward and note the rise and fall of the straw this will indicate TDC . once TDC is achieved note the mark on the pully should be alighn with a mark on the timming case .rotor button to number one lead will have you on compression stroke .cheers MAL

SOURCE: timing chain

Each gear has an arrow and a dot. The chain should have two differently colored links. Position the crankshaft sprocket so the arrow is pointed up with the dot to your right. Position the camshaft sprocket with the arrow pointed straight down at the crankshaft sprocket and it's dot should also be to the right. The colored links on the chain should be lined up with the dots.

When i change the timingbelt,How do i Time it?

Set your timing mark on outer cover to the flywheel timing mark on pulley(T mark), then take the covers off and look you will clearly see marks that line up on the cam pulley to block, crank gear to block, and water pump shaft to crank (separate belt replace both, and replace water pump in high mile cars. ) These marks will all line up when you rotate the motor to top dead center on the compression stroke..

Timing 1980 vw pickup

You can remove the #1 spark plug and get the piston at top dead center, (all the way up in the cylinder). You can also check the access hole in the top of the transmission housing, to line up the TDC timing mark on the flywheel to the transmission housing. The mark on the crank pulley is rather hard to see, just a little mark "V'ed" into the pulley lip.

[yes ]is the simple answer, a turbo starved of engine oil pressure even for a short period of time can blow the turbo; fit a new or a good second hand turbo.[hint]when testing a second turbo put your finger inside the turbo and spin it .a good turbo should spin quite easly for 3/4seconds with no noise.hope this helped you.adrian

Radio

My son has a 2004 Volkswagon Jetta that had a dead radio. It occurred after my daughter -in- law experienced a dead battery, requiring a jump start. The radio was totally dead. All fuses in the fuse panel were checked first. My local Volkswagon service center was kind enough to assist me in removing the radio from the instrument panel (special "key" required) free of charge. In the back of the radio is a 10-amp mini fuse that was blown. Check it out before you spend megabucks replacing anything else.
