Question about Cars & Trucks
The key will not turn in the ignition The ignition is on the dash.
Hi Sunny, W/D here.
When the key will go into the ignition switch, but will not turn it, the cause is usually a hung up pin in the lock cylinder. The easiest repair is to purchase some graphite and to give the lock a few "puffs" of the graphite dust, and then to rake the key back and forth in the ignition 5 or 6 times to distribute the graphite dust into the individual cylinder pin holes to free the pins up. If this doesn't work on the first attempt, fear not; do it again. It may take several tries, but it should free up. If it is severely stuck, you may need to tap on the face of the lock with a tack hammer (or similar). If the lock proper is damaged due to a failed part within the lock, it is more cost effective to replace the lock than to have it serviced. Other than debris getting into the lock, the only other thing that I can think of that can damage a lock is too much weight bearing on the key (too many keys on the key fob).
90% of the time the graphite dust will remedy the problem. Graphite powder is available wherever residential locks are sold, and also at craft stores. Cub scouts use it for their car races (Pinewood Derby) to lubricate their wheels. A tube of it is around $2 (USD).
Best regards, --W/D--
