Instrument Cluster Problem

Recently after I started my 1995 Grand Voyager, the gauges (tach, speedometer, oil pressure, voltage, gas gauge) all briefly pegged hard to the right (to zero), then went back to normal for a few seconds, and then just quit. They haven't worked since (except for once when they did what I just described and then quit again for good). The odometer doesn't work either. I checked the fuses and relays, and they are all fine.

FYI, before this all happened, one day the radio stopped working (all I got was a buzz). Then the radio started working again when the gauges quit. Really weird!

I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee that had the same problems you describe.

I cured it by removing part of the dashboard and cleaning/checking all electrical connections.

Any black leads that connect to the metalwork .. they are earth wires. Check them for corrosion and as they are usually just held in place by a screw - undo that screw and retighten it. A 'bad earth' can cause the problems you describe.

SOURCE: gas guage, tach problems

I have been having the same problem. My gas gauge reads empty when full, never moves. My RPM will go hay wire when in hot weather. Like if i'm going 50MPH the needle will go to the RPM 5. And sometimes even go past that intrupting my MPH. So they'll be intwind. So, I would not now how much gas I got, how fast I am going.

SOURCE: Instrument cluster stops working while driving and

Go to your Fuse and Relay Box called the Power Distribution Center located in your engine comparment and Remove and Replace your Accessories Relay. Your Instrument Cluster is run off this. You should have a Spare Relay of the same type (size and shape). If not use a non-engine operation Relay (that is known to be working!) of the same type (size and shape), and check the operations of both the Instrument Cluster and the relay you switched-it-out-for. If the Instrument Cluster works and the other quit working, then it is the Relay that is bad and nneds to be replaced.
If this does not work, or if you have intermittent failures, there may be a loose connection and/or a bad power or ground supply. Most of the time - it is the Relay that needs to be replaced.

SOURCE: all warning lights on instrument cluster are on,

Either your car is about to blow up, or I would suspect that your car's computer is faulty.
If that's what it is, you should be able to find one at a junkyard for between 35-100
Just make sure you know exactly what kind of engine and accessories(ac, turbos, etc.) so you can get the right kind for your car.

In the instrument cluster the only needle that registers is the gas. The Speedometer, tach, nor temp registers. The trip gauge doesn't work, the mileage does't increase. I've done the diagonstic test,...

Maybe the cluster but try checking fuses first. My Aerostar does this when one particular fuse goes out. Also, make sure NOTHING so much as comes near the back of instrument cluster. Even a little scrap of paper touching changes the electrical values fed back.

Don't know how handy you may be but would seriously consider removing instrument cluster, and checking solder on circuit board. Just did mine, wasn't hard, maybe a couple of hours work. Nice small, pointed solder gun will be needed as well. They have had many weird problems with gauges, starting, running etc, all narrowed down to that printed circuit board, where the solder on the contact pins become corroded or cracked and cause some pretty weird stuff. At the very least, try removing dash enough to remove 4 screws holding cluster in, and pulling off connectors and putting them back on a couple of times, just in case it's just a dirty connection. If you decide you want to try it, and need more specific instructions, let me know, or even google , Dodge or Plymouth instrument cluster soldering, as there is some pictures and videos out there on the subject. Good Luck, and let me know how you make out.

1999 Cherokee, Changing out instrument cluster?

Unfortunately I believe this can not be done because the sensor for idiot lights are different from the sensors for gauges. I don't know this for an absolute fact but in most instances this is true.
