Truck was doing some misfiring so I was going to get a tune up. Did oil change. Truck ran fine. went out to plow and the truck started to buck and shake and check engine light came on. Stopped plowing and the next day engine light was still on but truck ran fine. Dealer is talking about replacing phasers or engine. What do you suggest

on our 1997 it was a misfire and one of the ignition coils needed replaced.

You really should have a code check done. There are numerous items that can give you similar symptoms. Two places to look are the fuel filter (usually overlooked till they gum up, and the throttle position sensor (but test it first with an ohmeter. You will need a manual (vehicle specific ones are available at most larger parts stores and most of those stores also do code testing free)

same thing happened on my 1996 Mercury Cougar XR7 4.6 V8,
i was driving an hit a pot hole then my car started shaking and i noticed a major loss in power also the check engine light came on and started flashing, took it to O'Reillys and had the codes read, misfire on Cylinder 4, replaced all 8 spark plugs and all 6 sparkplug wires and it ran fine!
