We have a 2001 Mazda MPV, we have a problem with the alternator charging system. We replaced 3 alternators and we discovered that the alternator is burning the computer. We replaced the computer and it got burned after 5 days. Can we install an external voltage alternator so we avoid the computer get burned again? Or somehow to avoid the computer to get burned?

It is likely your charge wire or field circuit is shorted. If you mean you want to install an external regulator, I cannot recommend that, as it will likely cause a fault to disconnect the alternator from the computer. Trace all of the alternator wires, big and small; and I believe you will find a short. If you have an ohmmeter, use it to make sure the field power wire is isolated from chassis ground.

SOURCE: '98 mazda mpv, bottom alternator

no shortcut, had to take pulley off. It was'nt that bg a deal, just secure pulley so it won't turn while loosening. If the pulley had been 1/8th of an inch smaller in diameter, lower bolt would have came right out. Some engineer probably got a hell of a christmas bonus for that engineering marvel!!!
Thanks alot anyway,

Remove negative (-) battery terminal from battery. Remove drive belt from alternator pulley. Remove wiring harness (electrical connections) from alternator. Remove attaching bolts for alternator. Pry out alternator. Reverse steps to reinstall.

SOURCE: how do I replace alternator in mazda mpv 2000?

It is not a very difficult task, but one that would be better left to a professional for a couple of reasons. First, the system should be tested to be sure this is going to fix your problem. Many times a bad battery is the demon. Second, you will get a warranty with that repair if you have it done at a reputable garage/dealership. Just a couple of things to think about.

SOURCE: 1994 Mazda Protege, new battery, new alternator, wont charge

You must have blown a master fuse or fusible link.

Refer to the maintenance manual.

this happens sometimes during a jump start or a direct short in the elect system.

Removing either battery cable, thereby taking the battery out of the circuit, with the engine running can cause the alternator to charge full tilt and destroy sensitive micro volt (computer controlled) components; and I've seen wiring harnesses go up in flame from it. You may have a module problem.

Where can i find instructions on how to replace the alternator for my 2001 MPV? Thanks!

You can go to Autozone.com and select your vehicle at the top of the page. Then when that is done you go to the bottom of the page and select repair info. Then it will take you to the next page which will have 3 selections. I believe that alternator replacing is in the middle intermediate one. But could be in the one on the right. You will just have to check.

I have a Mazda MPV 2000. Apparently the alternator is bad and the mechanic is going to charge me $581.00. How hard is it to replace. In looking at it, it looks like it may be really hard to get at.

I have a 1996 Mazda Protege. 3 years ago the alternator seized up
and what a job that was! The cost of a rebuilt alternator was a bit
over $200.00. The spaces are so damn tight it took me over 2 hours to get the old one out and 1 and 1/2 hours to get the new one in. And this was working with the car on ramps. I miss the old days when I could change the belt and alternator on 75 Chevy
Impala in 15 or 20 minutes!

How do I replace alternator in mazda mpv 2000?

Typically an alternator is an easy fix. It requires removal of the belt from the engine running it, and a few bolts that attach it to the engine.

Because of the engineering with the 2000 mpv, it is a very difficult fix, and one that requires removal of the transaxle and exhaust manifold, as well as removal of the lower engine mounts. It will take a qualified Mazda mechanic 3.5 hours to do the fix - you can (at least) triple that amount of time as a DIY project (assuming you have the right tools).

Alternator not charging the battery.. Do you know where the alter

You own a mini van. These creations were designed by engineers to drive mechanics crazy! :-( Everything is designed with little or no access. The alternator on your van is made of aluminum (so it's silver). It is located near the crankshaft harmonic balancer. If you look at the harmonic balancer, the alternator will be at the 10 o'clock position. It is on the passenger side of the engine, behind the engine block. One of the fan belts goes to it. The pulley on the alternator has a belt on it. Follow the fan belt which goes towards the rear of the engine.
Charlie
PS You may have to get under the van to remove it.
