Why does my camry stall when the fuel gauge gets to a quarter tank? Car drives like a champ with gas above. Good spark and air. New fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, and distributor cap. EGR and TPS are good also.

when did car last run perfectly, never? (just bought it bad) or last decade? even bad fuel; of car was parked for over a year.

even partially clogged injectors, try Chevron fuel injector cleaner? to tank,? it can work ,others not.

last 2 is EGR, if it sticks open engine wants to stal.
bad ldle (too low), is stuck IAC valve.
TECH, bad engine, bad spark or bad fueling 1,2,3 in order.
we can not burn fuel(gas) lacking good spark so fueling is last,

or melted CATs and huge engine power loss.
them block exhaust flow, but is an easy vacuum test. (a tool)
low compression, lower than 150PSI on any of the 6.

if all is good, above fuel pressure is checked for spec, PSI
if low the FPR bad or pump weak
the service manual covers all PUMP ,FPR and injector leakdown and balance tests. using hand gauge. at the rail.

it like 1million post now www, new pump, new (list of 10 things) and still runs bad. why do that>? the tool is 20 bucks to prove pump good. (and a ton of wasted labor)

which engine options, surely you know it? to fix it you must.

and a fuel gauge tells you if fuel pressure meets spec.

and the injectors dont leak and a balance test show they are equal

all with one simple $20 gauge.

a $2 NOID lamp test the injector pulse.

SOUNDS LIKE YOUR FUEL PUMP PICK UP TUBE HAS A PIN HOLE IN ITWHICH IS CAUSING IT TO SUCK AIR. MAY HAVE TO REPLACE FUEL PUMP.

change the fuel filter for one, this is telling you that your pick up in the tank is getting clogged, I would drop my tank, and drain it, flush it, and check the pump at that time

For the age of this car it is a combination of both the fuel filter and pump, i owned one several years ago and found that the gas tanks are prone to rust inside, if you have replaced the pump and filter you may want to drop the tank again and check the screen on the pump if it is brown you have rust in the tank: another problem i had ( if you bought an oem pump ) they tend to slip out of position, you can tie the pump it place so it doesn't move......

hi it can really only be two things, first is the fuel sender on the pump inside the tank it could be stuffed or sticking causing a false reading, second it can also be a faulty fuel gauge on the dash.

You didn't say how much fuel is in the tank when this happens. Some of these old GM cars will starve for fuel if the tank is near empty and you are braking or stopping with the car facing downhill. It could be rust or scale in the fuel tank clogging the screen around the fuel pump inlet. Sometimes, putting cleaner in the tank of an older car will only cause more debris to loosen up from the inside of the tank and make the problem worse. If the problem gets worse, I would guess tht a new fuel pump/sloat assembly is in order. You may have to have the tank removed and cleaned or replacedd with a new one to prevent the problem from reocurring.

sounds like the fuel pickup in the tank is no good it controls the fuel gauge.

If your problem seems to be worse when the fuel tank is at a quarter or lower, then your problem is the fuel pump. I had this problem on my daughters car, asked every car guy I knew and a couple of dealer service techs no one could help. Since everything else worked and there was no problem if the fuel tank was above a quarter tank I decided to check the tank baffles. It turns out there are no baffles in this tank the fuel pump has a little reservoir built into the bottom with a little flapper button that is supposed to let fuel in, but not out. Anyway a new pump fixed my problem. Good Luck!
