My wife's Sentra started running really rough Monday afternoon. I was driving it home and the Service Engine Soon light started flashing. I kept an eye on everything and didn't notice any problems right away, but once I pulled into my driveway, the car started shaking mildly and the idle seemed high and rough. I cranked it up today and it is still idling rough and at about 1500rpm, but once you give it some gas up to about 2000rpm, it smooths out. The car has about 85000 miles on it and as far as I know, has not had the spark plugs or wires changed out. I was thinking this might help, as well as going ahead and chaning out the fuel and air filter. Any other suggestions or anyone with previous problems like this? Thanks.
A rough idle/high idle is indicative of a malfunctioning TPS(throttle position sensor) this is located on the throttle body ,is attached with (2) screws/bolts to the throttle body housing right off the butterfly shaft. it has either 2 wire or 4 wire plug. the replacement part can be purchased at locale auto parts store. I would also agree that a full service and tuneup be done. this will help with performance and will increase the fuel efficiency. please rate this...thanks
It could also be a coil on the top of one of the spark plugs,my wifes car did that also, we had the codes checked and it showed a mis-fire on #4 plug i changed the coil on #4 plug and that fixed the problem. i hope this helps

I have a 2003 nissan altima 2.5 and my car will start idling rough when it goes below 1/2 tank of gas- also the check engine light flashed for a moment just once... but when I added new gas and took it to 3/4 tank and then added Heet - all was fine- light went away- and I took it on the highway to gun it a bit and blow out the carbon... I have only 33,000 mi. and I am a city driver exclusively- not much highway at all.. do I need a fuel filter replacement, tune up, or is this a sign of condensation in the fuel?
I live in Chicago- and its VERY cold right now! please help:)
