Rechargeable batteries do have a lifespan, they won't recharge forever. If you have fully discharged the batteries then fully recharged them and they still don't have full power or they only last a couple minutes then they are done. If they won't charge or the charger shows them as defective, the only fix is to replace them.
These batteries never last very long. That model of drill is no longer made but I did find some refurbished batteries on EBAY. However, with EBAY you get what you get. Personally, I would never buy a refurbished battery and besides, they are way overpriced for a refurb. Sorry my friend but you would be better off just buying a name brand drill with Ni-cAD batteries (18V or 24V are the most common). I have a 24V DeWalt that I love and replacement batteries are cheap.
I do not recommend connecting anything but the factor charger to the battery. No 12v will not not charge an 18v battery. They can BLOW UP if you apply too much current. The correct charger can be found cheap. Look on craigs list under tools. Good Luck

Batteries are still evolving and have not been perfected yet. Some batteries still develop 'memory'. This can be 'cured' by discharging battery completely to dead. Then recharge fully. Do this at least two times.
