With conventional cooling system, the upper radiator hose goes to thermostat housing on the engine. You drain antifreeze down, a little, remove radiator hose from thermostat housing, remove thermostat housing, the thermostat should be inside the housing.
Some antifreeze is poisonous, dispose of properly.
Install new thermostat, hook everything back up. Add proper amount of antifreeze to the proper mark. Keep an eye on antifreeze level for a while till your sure all air worked out of the system.

yes it is very easy just remove the air intake duct located on the radiator (2 10mm bolts) this exsposes the thermostat housing it has 3 10mm bolt remove those and the top of the housing the the thermostat. clean off old gasket material, then replace the thermostat and gasket and reassemble the housing and air intake duct.

SOURCE: timing belt broke on 1998 kia sportage, need the correct points

Hi, Just to clarify and clear things up, the motor used in the 1998 to 2002 Kia Sportage is actually the Mazda FE3 engine and it is a NON-INTERFERENCE engine.

For any an all repair information on any Kia vehicle produced you can access the KGIS system (Kia Global Information System), just go to www.kiatechinfo.com and create and account (its completely FREE). After you do this you will have access to all the Kia Shop Manuals, DTC Manuals, Recall information for your vehicle and more.

I just had the same problem with my Sportage and found all the information that I needed through KGIS. Hope this helps and good luck on fixing your Sportage.

SOURCE: 2007 KIA Sportage check engine light just came on and now stays on all fluid levels are good

Had a similar problem and took it to the dealer - it is a defect which is common to a range of Kia Sportage. Eventually, the engine will not start.
The manufacturer paid for an engine replacement.

I have a 1997 kia overheating i have removed the thermostat

You have to install a new Thermostat because if the motor has no water pump thermostat sends all the coolant to the radiator and therefore the engine never warmed and you will not have heat because the coolant never be heated
