1999 Ford Contour engine light is on. Engine light came on for second time today. Reset this a few months ago and it seemed to be fine until today. The car seems to run fine at this time. Both times when this happened, I was driving home on the highway approximately 60-65mph.

A possible culprit could be your O2 sensor (Oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifod or piping). These are usually good for about 80K to 100K miles. When they fail or start to deviate too far from their baseline readings they can cause the check engine light to come on. Driving on the highway at higher speeds would result in higher exhaust temperatures than typically are encountered during in- town driving so this could explain why it only occurs on at higher speeds (which equal higher engine loads of course). You could buy an engine code checker or take it to a shop and have them read the error codes for you to narrow it down and/or confirm my O2 sensor idea.

SOURCE: Contour died after starting - 3 times total - kept

did u have a check engine elight? had you just recently gased up?, u may have had some water in the fuel, i would have a Autozone parts store test the system for trouble codes, tell them u need an OBD 2 test run, it is free, if anything is failing it should have set a code in the cars computer.

1999 Ford Contour goes dead and will not start till engine cools, What causes this problem?

This could be either the crankshaft sensor or the temp sensor on the engine. IF you have a check engine light that is on, you can get the codes from it and see.

1996 using E85 because Ford encourages you to do so

No 1996 vehicle uses E85
That product wasn't even thought of or
available until a few years ago
The is 85% Alcohol & will ruin your entire fuel system
The car wasn't designed for that fuel,no idea why you
would even go there,just silly

Engine shuts down

The only way to know for sure is to hook a gauge to the rail and check the fuel pressure when it won't start.
Sitting for a few minutes and restarting is normally a sign of a relay or coil cooling off.
There should be a EEC relay that powers the dist module and ECM.
I know you said you have spark, but it could be something else
related.
Also, if you have spark at the right time and no fuel pressure, you should be able to use starting fluid to substitute.
I don't suppose you have dual tanks and the switching valve is the problem ?

they could b referring to the vehicle speed sensor, which senses vehicle speed for input to ur ecm and not to ur speedometer. u most likely have 2 sensors with almost same name. their located on ur trans, an some sense input shaft speed an the others sense output shaft speed..... good luck hope this clarifies it for u a little bit

I have a 1999 Contour, it died while driving. Has power, no start

Most the time the engine dies while driving is due to a crankshaft sensor failure. When this fails, the engine can't be started since the ECM doesn't know the location of TDC to provide proper ignitions. Have a shop check out and replace this part then you are good to be back on the road. Good luck.
