wikiHowFreezing cold weather can take a toll on car batteries. ... It's much more difficult to start a cold car with a mostly-empty tank, so do yourself a favor and gas up ...
Old new beetle VW harness has contact resistance problems(vibration of wires) and needs to be recrimped the long wires(vibration can be stopped by silicone rubber anchoring). Cold weather make battery voltages low and needs recharged with handbrake on(headlamps off) 10 minutes warming engine up the whole winter.
hard starting in cold weather for a diesel is a sign of problem injectors or battery not full charged
take it to a specialist diesel shop for a diagnosis of the problem
Many possible causes....Too little info to make an intelligent suggestion. Try charging the problem vehicle's battery with jumper cables for 2 minutes with the supply vehicle running at fast idle (or about 1500-2000 RPM, if it is tachometer equipped) before you try to crank the problem vehicle on a cold morning. If it starts right up, you likely have a weak battery that needs replacing.
One thing you can try since it starts good in warm weather, is to ,on a cold morning, take a hair dryer and warm up the suspect part to warm weather condition. Then try and start the car. If it start ok you have probably found the weak part.
I was just reading the owners manual for my 2000 beetle and it says the diesel fuel has a problem with the wax separating from it below 40 degrees. Put the car in a warm garage and it will start.
