Believe it or not the ford standard transmissions take atf used to be a heavy gear oil but now its ATF. You have a indicator stick that unscrews on the R-passenger side of the trans case and it should be 4-5 quarts, Good luck.

The 4 speed transmission electric overdrive is a A500 or A618 old numbers now called a 42re transmission both take the same pan gasket and filters. Fluid type is located on dip stick ATF (7176) sames as dex II/merc ATF plus fluids are a special mix use ONLY that type.

What type of grease or oil goes in a manual 4 speed transmission on a 1984 ford F-150 pickup

I know the four speeds (Borg warner) uses 80-85 weight gear lube. Don't worry about using synthetic.

1988 ford van 6 cyl, is it a c6 transmission?

Hello tbone.
There were only two transmissions available in the E150 in 1988.
If your van is a 3 speed it is a c6.
But if an overdrive it is an AOD 4 speed.
Hope this helps you out.

I lost my owner's manual, and I need to know the capacity of the manual transmission! Also, I was told to use MERCON 5, is that right?

well there are a few different transmissions they put in this truck.
Borg-Warner T-18 4speed takes SAE 80W
Ford S5-42 ZF 5 speed take Mercon 5
Mazda M50D 5 speed with overdrive takes Mercon 5
Mtsubishi FM132, FM146 5 speed with overdrive takes SAE 80W
It looks like they all take between 3 and 4 litres. You may have to call the dealership with the vin number to find out which transmission is in it but you could also just pull the drain plug out just a little bit and if the fluid is red then its mercon 5, if its brown and really thick fluid then its SAE 80W

Not shifting into drive

Look into the speedometer issue. The pcm won't shift the transmission right without the speed input. Check the vehicle speed sensor. Is it 2 or 4 wheel drive?
