Checking 1993 Volvo 940 flywheel

1993 Volvo 940 Base with SOHC 2.3 4 Cylinder engine and Automatic OD Transmission. Engine cranks but won't start. Have already replaced High-pressure fuel pump/filter, distributor cap & rotor plus ignition cables, and coil. Still no consistent delivery of spark to engine. Breakdown happened on freeway. I've never had this happen to me before and had no prior instruction on any special procedures to follow. I did not shift to Neutral, but coasted about 1/4 mile in "Drive" until off the freeway. One party suggests possible issue with Flywheel. Is there a way to check this without having to remove the transmission assembly? Is there a sensor that might be the problem as opposed to the flywheel itself?

SOURCE: engine swap, car will not start

It sounds like you don't have the correct flex plate and it is throwing the timing off not letting it fire at the correct time.

If flywheel is put on wrong does it throug out timming

You can not put a flywheel on wrong, or the torque converter
in an automatic or clutch in a standard, won't line up

Also your engine won't start, as the crank position sensor
won't see #1 or any other cylinders

Timing is all done by the electronics, for the better part
of the last 30 years

2006 jeep wrangler automatic transmission drifts in park

I can't imagine how the drifting in park and the starter won't crank the engine could be related.
It is possible something happened to the flywheel and it is not now connected to the crankshaft, or the bendix gear on the starter is not engaging the flywheel.
But the transmission has a pawl or gear that locks the output shaft of the transmission when the shifter is in park. That gear could be damaged and would allow the truck to roll in park.
And the parking gear would not have anything to do with the starter issue.
I think I would check to see if the flywheel is connected to the crankshaft first.
Is the truck still under warranty ??

Starter works fine but won't crank engine. the pick up has to be given a push first before it starts

If the starter is spinning when you try to start but doesn't spin the engine over then you most likely have teeth missing off the flywheel ring gear. The facts that you say you have to push it and then it starts means the flywheel position changes and the starter has good teeth on the flywheel to engage. To confirm this next time the engine won't crank over remove the starter and look inside at the flywheel for missing flywheel teeth.

Replacing a starter on a 1993 volvo 940 turbo. Is this a difficult task?

It looks easy for the 940 but I am not sure about the 940 turbo, as maybe some of the turbo parts are in the way. I'm not sure about that, since there is no documentation on the turbo model vs. the 940 standard model. If you can follow the following instructions, then I would give it a whirl.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - 1993 Volvo 940
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
  2. Disconnect the leads from the starter motor.
  3. Remove the starter motor retaining bolts.
  4. Remove the starter motor from the vehicle. To install:
  5. Position the starter motor to the flywheel housing.
  6. Apply locking compound to the bolt threads and install the retaining bolts finger-tight.
  7. Tighten the bolts to approximately 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  8. Connect the starter motor leads and the negative battery cable. Fig. 1: Unfasten the nut retaining the starter cables . . . 90952p12.jpg

Timing problems

Ok, the problem you're having is not very common however to solve this you need to replace the flywheel with the one that come with your new engine because the gears on both flywheel are different and the speed sensor will have difficulty reading the gears. Therefore the car will either misfire or not start. Did you relpace the engine with a 940 volvo 93 and up?

940 volvo comes out of overdrive without touching button

IPDusa.com.  If its similar to a 240 (and it most likely is) you can purchase a block off plate for the solenoid so you won't lose 4th gear (actually its OD from torque converter lockup).

1995 Volvo 940 flywheel

1995 940 has a crank position sensor mounted at the top rear of the engine which reads cranks position off the flywheel. Though not adjustable, it is a part which fails often causing weird and intermittent no start/hard start problems as well as other faults. While the part is not too expensive, you do have to crawl on top of the engine to see it, and its a pain to replace. Guess you could remove the hood, but I have changed mine without doing so. Get light on the area, and you can do it. If you are having timing too far advanced issues (running on when killing engine or "pinging" on acceleration several other parts may be suspect. Knock sensor, spark plug issues, carbon buildup, O2 sensor, lean condition and more. Good luck.
