I have heard of GM trucks having a "Check Gages" light. My '92 Sierra has one.
After you put a battery on and the check engine light came on. You need to have the charging system check there is a reason you lost a charge on that old battery. You are more likely having a charging system problem and a new alternator may be your solution
Please 1st make sure your friend connected positive cable on positive battery terminal, red cable goes on positive (+) battery terminal and black cable on (-) negative, and in case the light says check engine please take it to an autopart to retrive trouble code(s) for free. hope this will help you. Thanks

sorry it says check cables not change cables
is this in the digital display or is it and actual light??
Hello! There isn't a "check cables" light...Have another look; Perhaps you meant "Check Engine Light'...In which case a trouble code is set...Disconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes ...Then re-connect and see if it clears...Guru...saailer
Bit of confusiion on the clarificatiion , please confirm the error seen once again, if this check engine on the dash panel?
