I agree with afarri. Most new automatic transmissions are very sensitive and easily effected by worn out or dirty Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). Often the ATF should be changed at 30,000 mile intervals. Look in your owners manual and make sure you purchase the correct type ATF and try changing the fluid. The fluid change will often take care of many small quirky problems that are starting to show up.

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you remove the positive battery connector and let it sit for at least 5mins. before reconnecting it. This will reset the system and can get your vehicle back to it's normal operation.

You may want to replace the transmission fluid as well for it can be burnt.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

I have a 2000 Dodge stratus that won't change

Do the old additive method before you give up....................add one and a half cans of `Sea Foam TRANSMISSION TREATMENT' to it and follow directions. Sometimes that can of stuff is AMAZING! don-ohio

My 1995 dodge stratus has tranny problem . while driving , after about 1/2 hour the tranny slips into low gear and won't upshift ,likenit is stuck in first. this particular vehicle has a 2.4 engine . i...

Valve body in the bottom of the transmission has valves that ware out and the oil is thick when it is cold and when the oil gets hot it gets around the ***** out valves thus shifting back in to first could be the 2-1 downshift valve.

1998 Dodge caravan AWD transmision slips at full throttle

Have you serviced the transmission latley? fluid, filter, band adjustment

Usually under heavy throttle causing the slip is caused by a seal in the pump leaking off hydraulic pressure letting the clutches slip.

Does it slip in all gears or just 1st.?
Does it slip in reverse?
The reason I ask this is because 1st and reverse use different fluid pathways,

also you can take it to a tranny shop and have them check the fluid pressure at the accumlator port to determine what the exact problem is,but my advice is to just drive it easy and make it last as long as you can,a new or rebuild tranny from a dealer would run 2500 or more.

there is a website www.car-part.com that you can use to find a replacement transmission

I have lost the drive gear in my transmission, and the car will not shift, Is my transmission down or is this a sensor or relay problem

on dodge stratus when you have no gear change or slipping of gear change only 2 good possibility's do the the way those trannys are designed either!! the tranny filter is stopped up and need's changed which is rare on those tranny's or you have internal damage to the clutch pack/ clutch apply servo's and front pump

1995 dodge neon

Well, I would check the fluid. IF the fluid has metal shavings, dark in color , burnt odor.
The fluid should be light red in color.
Sometimes a fluid change service to the transmission can clear up a lot of problems and very cost effective vs. a complete transmision.
I would try and take it to local transmission shop.

1995 Dodge Stratus transmission

It sounds like a cooling problem, is the fluid being cooled by the pipes from under the radiator? I have tried draining & changing the fluid, it helps sometimes, but it sounds more like the brake bands in the gearbox need adusting, and that means going to an auto transmission specialist, they will know in 5 seconds flat.
