Car shuts off when you put it in gear but starts back up.

There might be a problem with the alternator, specifically the diode trio that is inside the alternator. Have your charging system checked. You can do it yourself if you have a voltmeter. Start car and check voltage across the battery terminals. You should get 14.5 volts or higher.

Gear selector switch bad.

Speed sensor gone bad .

that code is set when you disconnect the battery. It can happen if you have bad connections. Sounds like you have a lot of things wrong.

It could be anything from faulty coils, injectors, head gasket. Did the car over heat? Has it been regularly maintained, is it low on oil?

Check fuel pump pressure. Borrow a Fuel Pressure Tester from AutoZone, Checkers or similar auto parts store, they will also provide the proper operating pressure of your fuel pump. Here is a diagram on how to hook it up.

Check brake light switch behind brake pedal remote start has to be wired into switch so vehicle will shut down when brake is depressed when put into gear without ignition switch turned on. possible bad connection on switch or wires are not attached.

94 chevy cav. after driving for a while, the car shuts off when u break. it will start back up but stalls as soon as you put it in a gear. let it sit for half hour and it will drive again for a while then starts the process all over again. any suggestions

If the clutch assembly of the car is damaged or has wearied out. It may cause problem to put the gears. The best solution is to replace the clutch assembly.

I was an ASE master auto tech for 13yrs and have seen this problem before. It sounds like the idle air control valve on the intake manifold has stopped working and the idle speed is not being controlled(letting the engine idle too slow which causes a stall when put under a load such as putting it in gear). Try giving it a little throttle while putting it in gear if that works let off the throttle if it dies you will know the Idle Air controll is not working.
