Ok, so my engine light came on awhile ago. Diagnostic said it was a problem with my 02 sensor. I drove with it for awhile (2-3 months) knowing that a faulty 02 sensor wouldn't kill me. Recently I replaced it. I went into the shop to have my codes reset and there was 3 O2 codes and one EGR code. I thought that possibly the O2 sensor being broken was the reason the EGR code was triggered and with a new 02 sensor, I would be fine. The engine light stayed off for a few days but came back on. Now it's saying I have an issue with my EGR valve. Do I need to replace it, or clean it, or is this an electrical problem? What is my best bet here in solving this issue? Also, will a faulty EGR valve cause my gas mileage to be very poor and cause other performance issues with my car?
Absolutely a bad o2 sensor can cause problems with performance. If you replace one it is highly recommended to replace both or all four depending on your vehicle. If one o2 sensor is making your vehicle run rich you will burn more fuel and in return increase the amount of carbon or unburnt fuel if you will in your egr valve you could probably get away with cleaning it but I would recommend replacing it, it will save you from having to pull it off again. Check your catyletic converter because long exposure to carbon will mess it up.
Yes a bad egr valve can cause rough idle. Most of the time the egr valves stick on that model. If you take the egr valve off and turn it over you will see a small opening and a pintle which looks like a torx head bolt. Try pushing on the bolt and most of the time a faulty one will stick open. It sould move freely. On those there is no way of cleaning them you just replace them. Hope this helps.
I had the same problem, and I must disagree, I removed it and used choke/carb cleaner and screw drivers plus a little O-ring pick set of like hooked and sharper tools to scrape it clean and spray it, and scrape it and so forth. She is back to driving like a champ. i have a 1999 Saturn SL2 Manual. I am making a youtube video of the fix, I'll post its link when its up.

Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) 1 , Bank 2 - No Activity Detected Problem areas:
- Wiring.
- Open circuit in signal wire, between Heated Oxygen sensor 1, Bank 2 and ECM. (Must check and confirm)
- Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).
- Engine control module (ECM).
P2195 is 02 sensor stuck lean ( bank 1 sensor 1 )--check for a possible vacuum leak in all vacuum lines.-- if no vacuum or other leaks could be egr valve. p2196 is the same but stuck rich,p0053 is ho2 sensor bank 1 sensor 1 heater resister all codes are related to the o2 sensor, p0113 is intake air tempurature curcuit high input ( IAT ). check wiring or senser replace if need be. if you can not find any leaks and egr system is ok, then its the 02 sensor causeing this.

EGR flow is monitored by the PCM by it looking for a reaction in the FRONT O2 sensor in responce to the command given to the EGR valve. The linear electronic EGR valve sends a return signal to the PCM indicating the relative position of the step motor and hence how far open (or closed) the EGR valve is in responce to the PCM command. The PCM expects to see (within a set of given parameters) a change in the O2 sensor reading (change in exhaust gas make up) after the EGR valve is commanded open or closed. If it doesn't, or that change is not within the expected parameters, a code will be set based on the skewed data. Generally a "insufficient flow" code will be set by:
1.Faulty EGR valve (sticking, or "lying" to the PCM about the actual valve position) 2.Faulty electrical connection at the EGR valve (causing false data) 3.Clogged EGR passages 4. Bad read from the MAP, or TPS, causing the PCM to misinterpret the EGR data based on faulty operational data from the other sensors 5. (Very rarely) A marginally "slow" O2 sensor. (PCM does not "see" the change in exhaust make up quick enough and interprets that as poor EGR flow.)I have found that normally this code means that the EGR is not opening the amount that it has been commaneded to by the PCM. Normal cure for me lately has beed to repalce the EGR valve and to clean out the passages while the valve is off. The Tech 2 is able to command the EGR open and show the commanded opening and the actual opening. COULD BE A VACUUM LEAK TAKE PROPANE TORCH AND LEAVE OFF PUT AROUND ALL VACUUM POINT WHERE YOU SUSPECT COULD POSSIBLY LEAK ENGINE SPEEDS UP THAT'S IT WORTH A SHOT BEFORE SPENDING MORE CASH
