1998 f150 won't start in park and rolls when put into park?
Had entire rear end replaced now it won't start unless I put it in neutral?
Also rolls when in park and makes a clunking noise? Does all of this have anything to do with the shift column? Or is it the parking pawl and the safety switch that keeps it from starting unless it's in park?also, does this have anything to do with the rear brakes? I know they are bad, but e brake works fine? It's an old truck and always been kinda funny when it comes to the shift column, and by that I mean it's always been hard to shift out of park and doesn't want to " find" reverse easily without skipping it and going into drive? Hope someone understands my problem??? Thanks!!

Sounds like the neutral safety switch has gone bad. These are on almost every kind of vehicle now. The switch prevents the car from starting unless the automatic transmission is in park or neutral. For a manual transmission, the clutch pedal has to be depressed. On a motorcycle, the clutch handle has to be depressed. You can pick up the switch at any parts store near you and replace it yourself if you are mechanically inclined. If not, I'm sure a tech or dealership will be glad to help you with the problem.
This could be the problem. If your dash indicator is showing reverse but the transmission is in park it could be the safety switch. I'm not talking about the safety switch in the transmission though. In automatics they put a second switch to kill the starter from engaging. You need to adjust the linkage. If your shifter isn't actually on the column but the indicators are there is a cable that attaches the floor shift to the column and that is adjustable. Put the Floor shifter in Park and turn the column section nearest the dash by hand until you find park. Then adjust the cable length as needed. If all you have is the column shift it is still a cable adjustment. Set the emergency brake, drop the shifter to low 1 and adjust the cable linkage by loosening it on the transmission and manually move it all the way to low 1 then tighten it down then move the shifter to park and repeat teh adjustment process to verify that it is properly aligned. Lock the linkage back down and see if the vehicle will start, if it doesn't move the shifter to neutral and try to start the vehicle if the vehicle starts then check the column shift safety switch at the park position to make sure it is still in place and working. Typically, if the vehicle won't start in Park or Neutral it is more likely to be the Transmission neutral safety switch.
Hello, Check under the dash at the top of the Brake pedal lever. There should be a switch there and it is an Interlock switch. This switch can be hit by your feet and either knocked out of adjustment or broken. There is also another switch which ties into the system and keeps the car from starting unless it is in Park or Neutral.
When you put in the new Ignition switch, there are sometimes adjustment screws which are slotted and allow the Igntion switch to be mounted higher or lower with respect to the Keyrod or cable in the steering column.
Where you need to get power is the small (Tickler) wire on the starter solenoid. You can unplug it and test it for power when the keyswitch is turned to START. The Interlock switches power the Tickler.
This is what you need to think about. The gearshift Interlock must be adjusted to make the Tickler work in Park or Neutral. The Brake pedal Interlock is suppose to prevent the Tickler from getting power unless your foot is on the brake. Sometimes your Brakelights will not work if the Brake Interlock is broken. Have a helper check them or Scotch-tape something across the rear window Brakelight so you can see it work from inside the car.
