Volvo sedan 2.0T auto has lost power about three times and last time the battery was completely drained. I bought a new one and took to the dealer to remove the SRS message. We thought we had now cleared the problem but alas a week later the problem is back preceeded by the car jerking and the dash switching off but the car can start this time. SRS message on and the clock has lost time. What could be causing this problem? I notice it happens when it is extremely hot (38-40 degrees celcious). I have seen evidence of rat activity in engine area, could it be that I have a short somewhere?

SOURCE: Battery Drain

It is either a short somewhere in the electrical system or your alternator is bad. If worse came to worse what I have done. Is installed a switch in the power cable and then you just pop your hood and basically disconnect the battery every time, the switch just makes it easy. This is often a million times easier then finding a short somewhere in the miles of wiring.
Good luck I know how that is,

SOURCE: 1997 Volvo S90 will not turn over, electrical power but no click

I can almost guarantee you that the gear position sensor is bad. I've replace 30 or 40 of these on 960's for these very same complaints! If you check the codes for the transmission, it will give a 3-1-3 or P0705 code. You will however need a code reader to check this on a 1997 model.
Check page 33 in this PDF for an explanation of the fault

SOURCE: CAR IDLE SPEED FAILED TO DROP BELOW 1100 RPM WHILE breaking

This problem is due to the malfunction of the automatic cruise control by the Electronic Engine control Unit, I faced the same problem in my Honda n I rectified the same by simply resetting the ECU. You can simply pul out the cables battery terminals and leave it for 12 hours and fix the same again to sort out the issue.

SOURCE: Just Bought a 1990 Volvo 240GL Auto 2L

It depends upon the number of valves, whether your engine will be ruined. An 8 - valve head is a non-interference, and won't be damaged. The 16 - valve DOHC head IS interference, and will definitly be damaged. However, whether it is interference or not, The timing belt should always be replaced when a car is purchased with no records. I'd also suggest getting a new timing belt tensioner assembly, as they tend to wear out at high mileage.

SOURCE: "SRS-AIRBAG SERVICE" fault message

Here's a quick check list for most common cost of SRS / Air bag problem.

Dirty contacts on driver and passenger seat belt buckles

Dirty contacts on seat belt connectors (under seats)

Dirty contacts on driver and passenger sides weight sensors (under seat)

Seat covers

Weight on passenger seat
(Example: grocery package trigger SRS / Air Bag light on the way home.)

I recommend you to pass an vacuum over the contacts and use CRC electronic parts cleaner to rule out connectivity problem.

I DO NOT recommend disconnecting the negative battery connector to clean the code(s).

Without the code(s) the dealer will takes "BILLABLE" time to reproduce the problem.

New Battery low voltage issue

If the alternator light is on there is a problem in the charging system. Have a local Autozone or O'reilly auto parts test it when the light is on, do not have the test run unless the light is on. I think you have a defective alternator but the meeting should confirm this.

Hello, The alternator is responsible for charging the battery. From what you have explained it sounds like a bad alternator. I may go to the person you bought the car from and ask to see documentation such as a receipt of purchase of the alternator. If he bought a new or refurbished alternator then it is defective and the place it was bought from should refund or replace it. If he got one used off another car or perhaps a junk yard then "new" can be an overstatement.

87 f250 drained brand new battery

I would first have the alternator checked by an auto electrician to ensure it is working correctly and is providing the correct volume of current. It may be faulty and when driving you will be drawing battery power instead of power from the alternator to run the electrics. This will drain the battery.

Alternators do not last forever and if you are still running the original unit it is likely to be on it's last legs and you will need a replacement unit.
