SOURCE: 97 ford taurus idles and kills when putting it in gear
check the vaccum hoses to make sure none are off and check the timing and also the drive belt and also check the vacuum hose behind the throttle body

its in the timing ...whenever you start it it sits and idles fine but when you go to put it in gear it dies...the timing needs to be repaired. its a guaranteed solution.
SOURCE: fmx transmission not shifting out cable & fliud ok.
most likely a stripped out torque converter or a broken pump shaft. common on the taurus. transmission has to come out to repair.
SOURCE: transmisson question
Front pump may have gone bad. Check the transmission fluid level when the engine is not running, then check it again with the engine running. If the level stayed the same, the transmission pump may not be working which is causing your problem. Good luck and keep me posted. The other thing to that may have happened is the trans axle may have broke in the transmission causing the no forward or revers. Good luck and hope this helps.
SOURCE: 1997 Ford Taurus, Won't Shift Past 3rd Gear
The forward clutch control valve has a retaining clip that is known to break on these tranny's. This can prevent it from shifting into 4th gear. Good news, the part is five bucks. Bad news, it's in the valve body which takes a few hours to get to. I fixed mine in about 8 hours thanks to great step by step instuctions I found online. Search for "valve body removal taurus tranny". If it's not the retainer clip then it could be one of the solenoids on the valve body. I believe there's one just for 3rd and 4th gear. Good luck
