Crackling noise coming from behind dash of 97 Subary Legacy GT

When I start my 97 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT, I sometimes here a crackling or ticking noise coming directly behind my speedometer. This happens about 30% of the time when I am in reverse or driving, but never when I am standing still. The speedometer & odometer work fine, and the car runs perfectly.

This began last week after I took the car in for an oil change, but I think the problem may be electrical, because the noise causes static on the AM radio when I have the car stereo on.

Hi Jeff Jotz, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box? most likely a relay is failing. Try to locate it and replace it.

Check The Vehicle Speed Sensors.

The Legacy has 2 Vehicle Speed Sensors (VSS): VSS1 is located inside of the transaxle; VSS2 is located in the combination meter assembly.

VSS1

  1. Disconnect the electrical harness from the transaxle.
  2. Connect an ohmmeter across the transaxle's electrical harness terminals 9 and 16.
  3. The resistance should be 450-650 ohms.
  4. After testing, reconnect the electrical harness.
VSS2
  1. Remove the instrument cluster from the instrument panel.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connectors and the speedometer cable from the instrument cluster.
  3. Connect an ohmmeter or continuity tester across the combination meter terminals 7 and 11.
  4. Insert a small screwdriver in the speedometer cable drive socket.
  5. Rotate the speedometer drive and note the continuity across the VSS terminal. Continuity should turn ON/OFF 4 times per speedometer drive revolution.

SOURCE: 1995 Subaru Legacy oil and filter

Oil is 10-30 and the type of oil filter is up to you, you can go cheap or you can go expensive it is all up to you what you want to run in your car.

SOURCE: Overheat on my 1997 Subaru Legacy GT

Sorry if this might break your heart. I have '98 Outback which is the same 1st generation DOHC 2.5 engine. These are common head gasket problem (I'd say 100% of every engine sooner or later) once you have had your car overheated.

You will not get this comfirmed by just have your mech check the compression on the cylinder because we call it phantom leak (internal leak which can be confirmed with hydrocarbon in coolant). And then you will end up replace every other thing before you could reach the source of problem.

Other signs of this issue are as following: random overheating after freeway or uphills drive, bubbles in coolant overflow tank, oil residue in coolant overflow tank, bubble nioses from the a/c vent.

You're looking at $1000-1500 repair by independent mech as they have to pull engine out to fix the problem. I had mine fixed two weeks ago and now my baby is running like a champ.

SOURCE: 1999 Subaru Legacy Sedan.. speedometer works

I finally fixed mine, on my 1999 Subaru legacy 30th anniv edition. . .

I removed the speedometer head, and resoldered the green connector on the board. Then I also ran a wire to duplicate the trace wire from the middle pin to the first connect (about 4mm). Problem gone.

How come my wagon won't start but only sometimes?

Sounds like weak connection somewhere,I would start by one at a time, clean by scraping the prongs of each fuse. If this does not resolve your issue go by one of the parts houses that provide free electrical and charging system checks

Bought a 92 Subaru Legacy wagon that started a top-side ticking sound last night, first time. Of course didn't hear that when I test drove. Someone told me it could be valves?

hi yes ticking in early model subarus is very a common valve/lifter prob in most cases a decent oil change or anti ticking treatment can quieten it or stop the noise altogether however in some cases the noisy part may be damaged beyond repair and need to be replaced

97 Merc Grand Marquise just started a loud

If sound comes from under the dash, it might be an hvac actuator that is having a problem? Sometimes you can put your hand on it and feel the vibration? Sometimes with a relay, you can do the same thing.
