Easy job. Just loosen pan bolts enough to let the fluid start draining from one end. As more drains, keep loosening the pan bolts till you can remove pan and finish draining what's left in the pan. At this time, most people would also change the transmission filter body: it's right on bottom of trans. when the pan is removed, easily accesible. Parts stores sell a kit with new filter and pan gasket included. Anyway, now you are ready to install new pan gasket. Clean gasket mating surfaces as clean as you possibly can. let no oil or fluid get back on there. Place gasket on (most don't recommend adding sealant or gasket compound). Put pan on with all bolts fingertight. Then starting from center outward, start tightening them down to torque specs-it'd be pretty light torque, like around 20 ft-lbs-might want to ask a ford mech. what torque specs are. When done, refill ****** and check for leaks after running car.
That seems a lot simpler than I thought. The guys at the repair shop told me to get to the alternator for this car, they had to take out half the the parts. So I thought it was going to be tricky to get to the trans pan and wasn't sure if it would just slide out since the alternator was in an odd spot. Since the trans pan is broken, when we take it off from the bottom, we just bolt the new one on after changing the gasket right? I know nothing of cars so I just wanted to make sure before we go to work on it.
Yes. new pan right in place. Your pan is right on bottom of ******, I don't see how you need to take anything off to get to it, but look under car and see if anything obstructs the bottom of your transmission.
