If you have to pull a cylinder head on a 1993-1999 4.0L or 4.6L Northstar V8 to replace a gasket or do a valve job, do not reuse the old 11mm head bolts. Also, GM has revised the head bolt torque values and tightening procedure as follows:

In sequence, torque all bolts to 30 ft.-lbs.
In sequence, rotate all bolts an additional 70 degrees.
In sequence, rotate all bolts an additional 60 degrees.
In sequence, rotate all bolts another 60 degrees.
Torque the front three M6 head bolts to 106 in.-lbs.

For 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2L SFI OHV 4cyl the check the next Head Bolt Torque sequence...

Step 1: torque long bolts 8,4,1,5, & 9 to 46 Ft/Lbs torque short bolts 7,3,2,6, & 10 to 43 Ft/Lbs
Step 2: torque all bolts an additional 90 degrees Recheck final torque in sequence

*** CAUTION *** engine uses Torque To Yield head bolts (TTY) that permanently stretch during the initial installation. New head bolts must be used when cylinder head is replaced or re-installed to obtain proper torque.

If the 8th number om your VIN is a "J" then this is the correct prossess 3.1LTorque sequence --------- ' 6 2 3 7 ' ' 5 1 4 8 ' --------- Step 1: torque in sequence to 37 Ft/Lbs Step 2: turn an additional 90 degrees recheck final torque in sequence *** CAUTION ***engine uses Torque To Yield head bolts (TTY) thatpermanently stretch during the initial installation.New head bolts must be used when cylinder head isreplaced or re-installed to obtain proper torque.Always coat bolt threads with the proper sealant.
