1999 Pontiac Montana DIC is dead. Got one from junk yard and get only "--" for data. Any help? Do these have to be factory repaired?

  • Anonymous Oct 09, 2011

The reset thing I did already. I also did a little something else. I powered up the DIC with both buttons pressed and it cycled through some numbers and the like on the display. Can anything be learned from them?

The Driver Information Center is different in the 1998 and 1999 models from the later years. Those have the common issue of the display going blank and the fix is to re-solder the 2 surface mount resistors (http://forums.edmunds.com/discussion/13879/chevrolet/venture/driver-information-center-repair). If you try to connect one of the later model years DIC you get the no communication (--) issue.

You can try performing a diagnostic self-test of the DIC.

In order to perform the diagnostic self-test and reset the driver information display, simultaneously press the following buttons for at least 2 seconds :

MODE
ENGLISH/METRIC
The reset is acknowledged with the display showing all segments ON for 1 second . You may only reset the following modes. The reset affects all 3 of these modes simultaneously:

AVG ECON
FUEL USED
AVG SPEED

If all of the segments light as described above, but the same symptoms are still present follow these instructions:

Symptom: Driver Information Center (DIC) Always Displays Dashes

1. Check for a poor connection or an open in circuit 800 (Tan wire) between the DIC connector terminal 15 and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector C1 terminal 15.
2. If a problem is found with the circuit in step 1, repair the circuit and retest. Otherwise continue to step 3.
3. Replace the DIC and retest

Actually, the DIC can output fault codes.
Here is a list of the possible fault codes and their descriptions:

E1 - Compass circuitry test error
E2 - Analog to digital test error
    E3 - Non-Volitile memory test error
    E4 - Vehicle communication error

Please note that if you are getting fault code "E4", this is an indication that you have a communications fault. Circuit 800 (Tan wire) that I instructed you to test is the UART communications circuit between the PCM and the DIC. Communication faults on this circuit will cause the DIC to always display dashes. - which is why I asked you to test this circuit. If you are getting code E4 along with one or more other codes, this code MUST be fixed first.

2003 pontiac montana=Can some one help with instructions on HOW to replace radiator support bracket- it is completely rusted out-

If you are talking about the bottom core support that the radiator sits on, this is a weld in part from the factory and there is no "easy" fix. If this is the upper retainer, it bolts to the top rail of the core support and should be an easy swap with a salvage yard part.

The Driver Information Center (DIC) 99 Montana is out

I am assuming that the DIC does not "power-up" at all.

Check your owner's manual to see which fuse powers the DIC. If the fuse is OK, you need to get your hands on a wiring diagram and remove the DIC from the dash so you can check to see if you have a good ground on the ground wire to the DIC. Then check to make sure you have battery voltage to the B+ circuit to the DIC. If the proper voltage and ground are present, you will have to take the DIC to your local dealer for repair. Many GM dealers have an exchange program where you can turn your old DIC in and get a "remanufactured" one on the spot. Others will send your DIC out for repair and call you when it is returned to them.

I have a 99 montana passenger side sliding door dont work. Hit either button all it does is clicks and motor seems to be fine.. I went to junk yard bought complete new motor and everything that comes...

I would check the overhead buttons there are two one opens the door, and the other beside it that shows the van crossed out, disables the electric sliding door feature. try playing with that, Also remember, that vehicle must be in PARK for the electric sliding door to open. Make sure the power lock on that door is working, and check the child safety lock when you have it open by the doors catch. Hope that Helps You.

Light burned out on radio/clock dial - how to fix?

Sorry there is no quick fix for this problem. If it's the face plate that light's up, there are some electronic shops that can fix it for under the cost of a new after market radio. Just keep in mind there the junk yard has lot's OEM radio's waiting to be bought.

How do you decode the radio when you replace it with one from a junk yard.do not have the customer code number.

Any radio will do. To make it as easy as possible, get one which is the same size (width and height), and has the same plug for connecting to your existing wiring harness. Most General Motors radios would fit any of the GM vehicles.
