Check the fuel pump, when you turn the key to the on position, the pump should start for a couple of seconds, it sounds to me like its not keeping the fuel line pressured any longer, which is why your having starting problems, when you turn the key to on, Listen for the pump to start, you will hear it hum ever so slightly,, after a couple of seconds it should stop, if it doesn't,, its losing the pressure needed, you can have them checked , its not very expensive to get them checked, having to pump the pedal,, doesn't help with this problem,, and the over heating is more than likely associated with it too,, if its not firing correctly, it will tend to over heat at times

I appreciate the quick response, I had a suspicion that that was the issue. Is there any possibility the cat. could be an issue as well?

  • Anonymous Oct 07, 2011

normally the catalytic converted becomes plugged with excess amounts of fuel,, the unburned fuel really messes them up quickly, also, normally when the Cat is going bad or plugging, one of the OBD codes will surface when the check engine light comes on. you can also,, try this ,, if its fuel injected, remove the intake tube thats attached to the air cleaner at the intake manifold,, in that hole is a flap much like a carb .. if that opening gets even slightly gunked up,, it will make the car sputter and spit,, with the car off, spray some carb cleaner in the hole, and around the flap,, in this case less is better, and wipe out any excess with a clean dry rag. you might see a hole in the opening,, that will be for a sensor , and its normally recessed , so try and not get too much cleaner on that spot . Please take a second and rate my replies,, since I do this for fun, thats all I get out of it :)

Sputtering while driving and running funny.

It could be a clogged fuel filter or you could have a old gas coated inside the carbrator. Seafoam will fix that up in a hurry. Don't be supprised if it blows smoke its cleaning all the junk bout of your carbrator. I would start with the simpelist things first. Fuel filter Check your carbrator Throttle adjustment Fuel pump relay Defiantly get a Haynes manual it will trouble shoot you through your problem.

My 2004 cavalier will not turn over without excessive pumping of the gas pedal. Battery, starter and everything else seems to be fine. Is it the pump or something else?

Try this next time you start it. Turn the key to the run position, do not start the engine. Wait 3-5 seconds and turn the key off. Turn the key right back to the on position and wait for 3-5 seconds. Turn the key off. Repeat the above one more time. Now try to start. If it starts right up you have a fuel supply problem. Either the fuel pump is bleeding off or the fuel pressure regulator is leaking. Pumping the pedal is doing nothing besides buying time for the fuel system to pressurize. Post an engine size and I'll help you locate the fuel pressure regulator. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

Car stalls but easily restart when applying small pressure to gas pedal. also has problum holding start when key ignition is applied only must use gas pedal to start must keep pressure on peadl to remain...

Sounds like you have a either a vacuum leak or a cracked fuel line allowing extra air to be sucked into the carb fuel mixture. Make sure all small to medium sized hoses are well attached to their fittings and do not have any cracks in them.

1988 150 ran out of gas .cant get it started

Prime the pump six or seven times by turning the key from off to on position. There is a 2-3 second delay on the relay, so make sure to give it time to reset between turns...you should hear the pump engage each time. It should attempt to fire after that, and you can sometimes help it avoid stalling by feathering the gas pedal. You may have to repeat the procedure a few times.

1989 toyota supra hesitates and won't start

If Engine Starts with accelerator pedal depressed , check idle speed control valve (if equipped) and wiring connection. Did you check for vacuum leaks. Do you know if your ignition timing is correct? How did you check your fuel pump? I take it no codes have been set, so if not there are several things to check for when the engine stalls #1 is to check cold start injector and cold start injector time switch. If engine stalls sometimes- check airflow meter and connectors You can tap the connector or relay or wiggle and notice if there is a slight change in the engine idle.
